Definentily go electric. Especially for your first car. I would suggest the Traxxas Rustler. For $300 you can get a electric and everything to run it. It was my first truck and it really got me off to the right start. For $300 You can get the truck 2 Chargers and 4 descent batteries. Here are some links for what you need.
Truck- http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=TRA3706 or the newer one which can haul for a electric truck 35mph- http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=TRA3705
2 Chargers- http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=DYN4036
4 Batteries- http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=DYN1000
That Should put you right around $300
Hope This Helps

You do not have to go electric for your first hobby grade rc. Dont get wraped up in any one saying that electric is any cheaper then a nitro vehicle would be. Nitro's are able to be run for hours on time while you have to have several battery's to run for even 2 hours. And the longer run time's you want on a battery the more you have to spend on them.
I personally start out with a nitro but thats just me. If you like tinkering and working on things and you like the sound of an engine then a Nitro is the way to go. If you just want to plug and play with very little maintance then an electric is the way to go. It just depends on what you personally like. I happen to have several nitro's and an electric and I do not like the electric at all. I run it every once in a blue moon. But as I said that's just me and what my personal preferences are. I love the smell ans ound but for some people the noise and smell is just an annoyance to the neighbors or even the operator.
But anyways, Your choice should also be on part's availability. See what your local LHS has in stock and see what out of those choices you like. Also it depends on what you want. If you want to run it in you yard then a Stadium truck would not me a good choice and I would suggest getting a Monster truck or truggy. It all depends on what you are going to be doing with it and what surfaces you are going to be mainly driving on. This is affects what you should get. Just take all of this into consideration before you go and buy a hobby grade rc car

Well where are you going to be running? If your going to be running in your back yard then a MT(monster truck) is the way to go. If you have short grass then possibly a ST (Stadium Truck). A buggy can also runn in some longer grass then the st but not as high as a mt. Truggy is kinda like a mix between a Mt and a buggy.
For a st I would reccomend a team losi xxx-nt 2 or a team associated rc10gt.
For a mt The team losi LST2 or a savage x does ggod. A traxxas T-maxx and revo are also some good choices but there engine's are questionable.
For a buggy Ofna makes some good buggys for the 1/8th scale part.
As for a truggy I do not know as I never really owned one or driven one. But im sure that someone will chime in on the truugy part along with some other choices that will be good.

125cchyperman is right too. You dont have to go electric for you first car. Nitrous cars are great. You can run them as long as you want as long as you have gas. They have a lot more capabilities. You just have to know what you want to do with your car and then decide Electric or Nitrous.

1/10th scale use alcohol mixed with 2 stroke oil and nitromethane. Depending on the fuel that you get it could run you inbetween 20 to 30 dollars a gallon for fuel. But a gallon of fuel will last you for a while so dont get all woried about having to dish out a ton of money on gas every 2 or 3 weeks. You can get gasoline powered but those are usually 1/5th in scale and cost a ton more then the smaller 1/10th scale and you can not beat them like you would the 1/10th scale vehicles.
The reason why the fuel cost so much is because there is nitromethane in the fuel. These smaller engine's need the nitromethane to make the power that these engine do. If there was no nitro in the fuel the vehicles would make about half the power that they do now. But a gallon of fuel will last for a while. You will not be able to burn a gallon of fuel in one day unless you run your engine extremely rich and are full throttle the whole time and drive it for hours on end. Especially if you get a .12 or .15 it will take you all day of running to get that gallon of fuel empty.
I hope this has helped you.
