Savage X 4.6 RTR in a heartbeat, a great monster truck that will last forever and ever, great parts availability everywhere, great hop up options from literally hundreds of companies...I'd recommend it to anyone as a first nitro car, to make sure they get something easy to start tune and run, plus durable and easy to find parts for. It'll do about 45mph at full speed, but can easily be driven in a more relaxed manner.

EDIT: Forgot to say, I have one myself. I spend most of my time racing touring cars and buggies, but when I do feel like going to the park and grabbing big air, I'm very happy I have the Savvy, it's a real riot.

Savage comes with a rotostart. What's the budget? How much can you spend?

An Hpi firestorm wouldn't be bad for a beginner in nitro.

It would not be bad but I'm just wondering if something that big, that powerful, and that "up-scale" would be the greatest for a beginner in nitro. IMO it would be like giving a ferrari f430 to a person thats used to driving a family sedan. But this is just MY OPINION.

I understand what you mean, but I disagree, monsters are ideal beginner nitro cars, due to durability, ease of parts and availablity of hop ups. They are great learning platforms. I have a Savage X myself, and it is the slowest car in my collection, so I don't feel it's too much for anyone (although don't misunderstand, the Savage is fast, it's just I have faster).

I would stay away from Duratrax, only a personal preference though. The Savage is a GREAT truck.

This is just my opinion but the HPI line of products are very descent and parts are almost always available either through your LHS or online vendors. Yes like everyone else there is room for improvement but when I first got into nitro R/C i bought a savage 21 other then upgrades its the same platform as the newer savage x and this is the truck that I go back to when all I want to do is run around and backyard bash or in general beat the snot out of it. The truck can handle abuse for the novice driver and with a roto start it can make starting it much easier at times.

To follow the other posts i have to agree that the Duratrax would not be as good of a choice based on the availability of parts if something should break. I have a duratrax on road car and if I break something my LHS does not carry the parts from duratrax so I spend a few days waiting on parts to get delivered.
