It really depends on how much you're looking to spend and what kind of battery charger you have. If you have a charger that can charge Nimh battery packs then I'd suggest getting something like this: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXLZK6&P=ML

NIMH! never get nicds. you need to completely run down nicds before you can charge them, otherwise the develope a 'memory' and wont hold full charge again, they also wont last as long as a good nimh.

Most chargers will charge NiCd and NiMH. But yeah definitely get NiMH, their much more reliable. I wouldn't get anything lower than 3000 mah.

NiMH is definately the way to go these days. You'll see significant improvement over the nicds. About the only thing nicds are used for today is for things like my roto start or toy type RCs. If your on a budget you should check out the tenergy cells. They not as good as the IB cells or new Ener-G cells but they would be a significant improvement over what you have and are more budget freindly.

Lipos are definately nice and if its in your budget go ahead and do it. In this case it will probably be expensive for him to get into. You'll need a different ESC(or a low voltage cutoff) 30-$100's, a lipo capable charger $40-$150, lipo battery, 50-100's. So, if you get off cheap your probably looking at $120 which isn't too bad. You'll like the performance and runtime advantage if you can afford it.

I believe nicads only come in capacities of up to 2400mah so definitely go with nimh.

Lipo is a nice if you have the money but you'll get more run time out of Nimh. What I mean is that for the price of one Lipo you can get multiple nimh batteries where the capacity will be much greater overall. As time goes on Lipos will come down in price and make them the standard but more than likely we're years away from that. Of course Lipos have more voltage which is why most people go for them but that is another story.

As said above most chargers that can charge Nimh can also charge Nicds.

Ni-MH is better than NICD, it can last for a long time, and the capacity is also higher.in addition, our company also have charger especially using for Ni-MH, if you need, please feel free to contact me.
