I was a rookie too and I decided to get a cheap car to learn how to control it and learn some stuff about settings with nitroengines. My choice was a Kyosho DBX 1/10. It's a easy car to tune and drive. However If I could I would have bought an HoBao/OFNA Hyper 7 since it seems much more durable (or however its spelled). My DBX have broken the front arms like 4-5 times now and its getting expensive. I dont know if there is some alu-parts that I can use instead. However I would have bought a Hyper 7 RTR
(Not that DBX is bad, i really love the way it handles for a RTR).

A 1/10th stadium truck is a good beginner's car, just make sure you don't get an XTM Xcellerator, it's a good car but the drivetrain quality is rather low, HPI's Firestorm or Losi's XXX-NT would be great for a rookie.

Ofna Hyper 7. Great car for a RTR and only $300. Runs well and near indestructible. 1/8 is a lot of fun, and more durable than 1/10 as well.

Well, for someone with no experiance I would recommend an electric car. They are much easier to maintain then nitro.
I currently own a Revo 3.3, a nitro truck, and it requires lots of maintance, just like an nitro truck. Although, it is part of the hobby and can be enjoyable if you like working on them and learning more as you go along. But overal, for a first car I would go with something electric, and inexpensive. If (s)he gets bored of it then you can choose to upgrade from there.
Good luck!
