Yes it should work but there are a few things that you need to check and remember before you buy that. I thought that the 3 ch surface receivers would not work with this radio but you would need to E-Mail Horizon Hobby to see if the surface receivers would work, and check to see if the air receivers would stand up to the vibrations in a car. Also there is no return spring on the left stick in the normal throttle position so you would have to either get used to using the right stick for throttle or get used to having no return spring on the throttle.
I recommend just getting a normal car radio for cars and when you start flying get at least a 7 channel radio unless you never plan on flying heli or more advanced planes.

I would get the dx2.0 if you want a 2.4ghz radio. It comes with a bunch of servos too. I coulnt stand driving with those transmitters.

I looked up the manual for this radio and found this ;
"The DX5e is compatible with all current Spektrum™ and JR®
brands of DSM® aircraft receivers. However, when using the
DX5e with one of the Spektrum park flyer receivers, like the
AR6000, AR6100, AR6100E, etc., it is imperative that these
receivers be limited to flying Parkflyer-type aircraft. "

How long have you been around RC cars?? The stick style tx was just about out the door when I started but there were still a few around for cars and oh what a pain in the a@$ IMO. They are fine for planes but I could never get the hang of them for cars.

Here is a nice two stick radio for land use and is 2.4 mhz . Of course you won`t be able to use this for a plane if you get one later on .
http://2.4gigahertz.com/systems/futk3000.html is $530 at tower
This one is a lot cheaper
http://2.4gigahertz.com/systems/futk3010.html is $250 at tower
Some cheaper radios

http://www.hitecrcd.com/transmitters/show?name=Laser-4
they are not 2.4 mhz capable though .
I knew someone still had two stick radios for land . Hope this helps since you don`t like pistol grip radios .

Im sorry, but 530 bucks for a 3 channel radio. Stop wasting money and just get used to a pistol grip.
