I am trying to do a project and in need of some help. I bought my son a Fisher Price Power Wheels Jeep several years ago and he has outgrown it now. I am wanting to turn it into an RC vehicle now.
I have never built any RC anything before so I dont know where to start or even if this can be done or not. The vehicle is a power wheels jeep and is powered by a single 12 volt car battery. The vehicle also has 2 speed forward and single speed reverse as well. I would like to maintain these functions and also have full steering control as well.
If any of you have ever done this, or perhaps no someone that has, and can point me in the right direction of stuff I need to do this I would greatly appreciate it. I need this to be effective yet pocket friendly. I am not looking for a lot of bling bling or anything on this, just something I can do as cheap as possible and still maintain the functions listed above. I forgot to mention that the finished weight of this project will be about 150-175 pounds so I will need something for effective steering.
Here is a pic of a Power Wheel incase some of you arent sure of what one is.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Craig

well i think the hardest thing you will face is the steering. a guy i know made a r/c car out of an old go cart but was breaking servo and servo rods left and right do to the fact u need a great deal of torque to turn such big items. however, i dont think your wieght estimation is gonna be accurate because my little brother had a power wheel 4 wheeler and that thing ons weighed somewhere around 40 pounds, and the nect door neightbor had same one your trying to convert and seeing as i could pick it up when i was about 14 i dont think it could have weighed 150 pounds hehe.

It will weigh about 150 pounds when I am done with the finished MOD. The RC part of it is just the beginning
Most of the weight will be on the back end of it though so I am not sure how much the front end will weigh. I know I will have a 12 volt battery up front that weighs about 60 lbs by itself.

I watched an episode of junk yard wars where they made full size cars R/C and they used electric window motors to turn the steering wheel and just used the servo's to activate the switch.Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

you if you plan on going all out on this project i say you drop in a 5hp lawn mower engine =) those power wheels only go what like 5-10 mph max? wheres the fun in that, make that thing scream hehe. or i dunno if you planned on this anyway, but drop in a sterio system would be sweet if your going to be putting in a car batter anyway. just my 2 cents
