Default Antenna question

Hello everyone. I'm new to the rc world and these forums. This is a great site. I've learned a lot.
I broke the antenna wire about 1/2 way down. Can I solder it and put shrink tube on it?
If I replace the antenna wire does it have to be the same gauge wire?
Will I loose any reception by doing either?
Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forum

Yes, you can solder and shrink wrap the antenna and it will function just fine. You'll never get it back through the antenna tube but it will work just fine.

Yes, it should be as close to the same guage/size/flexability as you can get to the original. Not really for it's electrical properties but more for it's physical properties like flexability

You can get replacement antenna wire at most any hobby shop that is precut to the right length.

As long as you keep the antenna length close to the original length you won't suffer any reception loss.

Thank you so much for the quick response.
I was going to use a piece of 10 or 12 gauge copper wire and solder that directly to the receiver. It would be stiff enough and I wouldn't need the antenna cover to keep it straight up. I was more concerned with reception.

what i did with my antenna when it broke on my ae radio was that i cut the rest of the antenna close to the receiver (only left a about 1 inch and 1/2) and i took the am wire antenna from an old stereo and attached it to the remainder of the original antenna, this way you can still use an antenna tube

The problem with 10 - 12 ga wire is going to be three things, length, flexibility and weight. It has to be at least 18" long which will make it unweildy. Your best bet will be to just order a replacement antenna wire, unsolder it from the circut board and solder in a completely new one. Manufacturers use what they use for a reason and the biggest reason is because that size and flexibility wire works best

Thank you all for the replies. I think I'm just going to order a replacement antenna.
