Default Measuring engine temp w/multimeter temp probe

hey all,

Curious, does anyone here measure their engine temperature with a digital multimeter that has temperature measuring capabilities? I'm assuming you would contact the probe with the top of the cooling head, or even better, closer to the glow plug.

I use an infared temp gun but I would think that where you measure at would stay the same regardless of the device used to measure. I check at the GP or on the head as close to the level of the GP as I can.

Haven't used a temp gun for 6 years since I got into the hobby, never needed one. Maybe it could have come in handy in my TRX 2.5 days, but until I learned to tune I haven't ever needed one. Tuning my sound/smoke/performance is your friend. I guess the only reason I'd personally use a gauge is to measure temp during break in to make sure I'm over 210F.

I agree with the sentiment but you really did not answer his question. He didn't ask if/when he should use one, he asked if you could use a particular kind and where to take the temp from.

The first 25 years I was in this hobby there was no such thing as a temp gun. But that does not mean they are not a useful tool.

You always poke your head out when someone mentions temp gauges...

I have one of those venom temp gauges with a probe that loops around the cooling head and displays the temp.

I also have a temp gun, as I heard a lot of people say how inaccurate those temp probes are. I have to say, after trial and error of what fin to wrap it around (eventually 2nd from the bottom) the temps have never been any more than 5 degrees different from my temp gun. So, at least for me, it's accurate, and it also has a peak hold function which is very usefull

The only accurate way I ever got a temp measurement using a multimeter probe (thermocouple, or thermistor type) was to use heat transfer paste betwen the surface to be measured and the probe. Messy.

Any temp detecting device will work if you use it properly . I use a temp gun that I use for work and is very trustworthy .

Yes , rcnitrohead people should tune to sound , smoke and performance . But not everyone does and even so it is nice to see what temps your engines are running at .

Oh sorry if I misread the OP's first message then. I poke my head in to try to save people from spending an extra $25-$40 they don't need. Its too simple to do without a temp gauge once you get the hang of it.
