ok i am not sre if i striped sumthing or not but the diff (last gear in the trans)will not engage. by that i mean that plastic gear that goe around the entire assembly doesn't engage anything on the diff it just spins freely. can anyone tell me if there is something else wrong or how i would go about taking apart the diff to take a look inside thanks

Shadow, It sounds like your differential just needs adjusting. Take the CVD out of the right side of the differential, you will see the head of the differential bolt unless it is partialy hidden behind the plastic bolt cover, even if it is you will see a hole in which to insert your 5/64 allen wrench in. Tighten the bolt until the spring compresses fully, then back off 1/8 turn. if that doesn't do it you will need to disassemble the transmssion and check the condition of the differental drive rings and the 12 balls.....You can flip the drive rings one time before you have to replace them..

well found the prob i guess it is because it is an older truck and i just got it used could have something to do with it but the entire middle ring on the inside of the diff that holds all the ball bearing completely melted so i went and ordered a newer metal with a mip super rebuild kit thanks for all the help i am sure i will be back sooner or later with more questions with my new truck

Thanks! Now you did it. I just took apart my tranny. Why? Wanted to check it out for the new season. A little rebuild never hurts!
It looks good, no new parts needed. When you close the tranny up, spread a little grease around where the 2 sides meet to form a seal.

Shadow,
I am re-assembeling the tranny, and I need only 1 part. The diff gear is worn where the balls ride in it. They have been carving little pockets in the gear!
This is not a big deal. The gear is not expensive. So far, this is all I need in my pre-season rebuild! The question is - Will I be stupid enough to go all the way with the rest of the truck?
Nah!

The diff balls are very expensive. You might have made the right choice. The cost of a total replacement would have been very close to the rrp setup. I just don't know about the diff balls riding on the aluminum gear. It seems it would all wear out sooner.

Oh yea! So much for that snow day! I wish the weather guesser would get it close at least!
