Default Checking For Compression

How do you check your engine to see if it has compression. I know you can tell if its not running right or gets hard to tune but isnt there a way to do it without even starting up the engine?

Default compression gauge

You can use a compression gauge but you still need to start the engine to get it to the right temp.
Its best to check with the gauge when the engine is new after the break in.
Then you can check it at regular intervals to see how it compares to the initial reading.

Tower sells the gauges.
