brushless is clean and easy
brushless is clean and easy
After running nitro for years, and brushed electric/NiCd/NiMh, brushless is neither clean nor easy. There is a learning curve to every power system there is.
How can you call brushless "clean"? The SC10 gets dirty just like the Savage does, and ThunderbirdJunkie can't douse the SC10 in Simple Green after a run and bust out the hose.

as many have said, they both have their place. i miss nitro for the sound and pure enjoyment but electric is so lazy person friendly.
i prefer nitro because it just entertains me and i didnt have to tune that much, maybe 3 times a week running daily.
i presently only have an electric and its just not as fun. its entertaining for 5 or 10 minutes but i could be entertained by nitro just as long when it was just idling and the infrequent blips to keep it running.

I own both, and like both.
I have found that I like my Brushless in my monster trucks pretty good. Mainly because im the type that likes climbing hills, and just trying to get through rough terrain. The electric has gobs of torque with no delay which is real handy when you are heading up a hill. Its also nice to have reverse, and if you are creeping around slow, you dont have to worry about heating up the clutch, or the engine loading up.
However, I still like my nitro Savage, I just like a different kind of running with it. Mainly places where I can open it up and keep the speed up a little. Not places where I need to back up often and go slow because its technical. However, I have found that what I REALLY like a nito in is my 1/8th buggies I have owned. They are just a lot of fun to run, and they seem to tune easier being single speed and lighter than a truck, and they just are really a lot of fun to drive as a nitro. An 1/8 buggy is probably my favorite kind of nitro now.
Anyways, both have pro's and con's. Just run what you like, and in many cases, its both

electric guy here . but after messin with nitro i must admit they are just as fun . from a moron like me's point of view , i love them both. i love nitro's as long as i dont have to clean them LoL but honestly they are both great imo electrics are fun because to me with bl and lipo's you can really push your rc beyond the limits , but nitro i like because once you have them dialed in you can just run them and run them well till your rx bat's die anyway just 2 coppers from no one
were is physco venom anyway he is always in these nitro vs electric things

it seems to me nitro manufacturers are being pushed to produce engines of higher quality at a more affordable price because of the new electric boom.
i race both 1/8 nitro / electric buggy. neither car is "faster". if i had to choose one ill go for nitro, you are more involved with the car.

They are both dirty, both can go too fast to turn and both will cost more money than you thought they would. Electric RTR? Still need good batts and charger. Nitro RTR? Need gas, ignitor, possibly low cost battery and charger for starting system, better get a couple extra glow plugs too.
Either way it's fun. The excitement of driving after charging with electric and the excitement and anticipation caused by breaking in a nitro engine. If you have to re-tune your nitro every time you run it, you're definitely doing something wrong. I only have to turn my HSN 1/8 of a turn leaner or richer and it'll wrong like a champ anyday. Once you have the tune right, you will not have to adjust every run. My preference is definitely for nitro. I love the sound, smell and look when it's running.
My electric cars/trucks are good for teaching my 8-year old how to drive and maintain a real RC car/truck though.
However I will say, on smaller tracks, I've gotten my ass handed to me by guys driving electrics against my nitro. There's something to be said for instant max torque from the start.
Clean up is a PITA either way.

Not really going to rant but more so post comments to what I read

Now electric clean up my one was nice when it was waterproof easiest clean up ever fill up tub with semi soapy water throw it in and hose it off

Nitro clean up is similar to non-waterproof electrics UNLESS you spill nitro all over your vehicle, cause you don't have a fuel bottle, have leaks in your hoses that spray it on the chassis, or somehow managed to put your pip on backwards and have the exaust spraying into the vehicle. Generally though the oil should go out the pipe and fall on the ground (or spray the side of the body which windex will clean off real fast). One thing I really like about the savage is the exhaust points down so it sprays all oil into the ground minimizing cleanup.

It amazes me how people who have owned both can say that nitro is ''less maintenance'' It requires an extensive break-in, then constant fiddling with the carb to get it to run right depending on the weather. With electric, you plug in a battery and away you go. Aside from occasionally spraying the crud out of the motor, there is no maintenance or setup involved. Nitro has it's perks, but it isn't easier by any standard.

Also agree with TBJ's reply if your fiddling with your carb all the time your doing it wrong. Its probably one of the 2 Either you bought a cheap ass engine that has a cheap carb on it, or it has airleaks (which are more common on cheap ass engines)
As for the ones saying instant torque is a bonus on BL I almost find it more of a drawback. It causes extra stress, and breaks parts faster than a nitro can.
Things I've yet to break on my nitros that I destroyed on my electrics.
Motors - Yes I bought a few used lemon nitro's off ebay but that was more due to the prior owners running them too lean till they were toast. My electrics were bought new and got toasted while experimenting with gearing. Side note I've also never had a nitro motor cog even at low rpms

Pinions - broke a few on electric $10-13 each and are all different pitches, yet to replace a clutch bell on a nitro. On pinions I've actually ground one to oblivion in less than 2 minutes while the wheels were off the ground (still no idea why castle sent such a cheap ass pinion with their system)
Dogbones - I've snapped dogbones on BL power easy, Nitro I've never even bent one.
Now excuse me while I wait for my parts to fix my brushless truggy, which completely destroyed its hardened steel pinion gear, along with a few other parts after 5 minutes on its test run.
Crap guess it kinda turned into a rant...

All day breakin for a nitro? I've broken every one of my engines in the same time it takes me to charge one lipo. Hell when I do break one in I just take my laptop out and watch some videos while it does its thing, kinda like what I do with my lipos every time I have to charge them before use...

To be fair if I could access the site yesterday it wouldn't have been that long.
