You need to give some more information.

What are you looking to do with it?

Do you want on road or off road?

what is your budget?

There is more but that is at least the basic.

Well the Traxxas XL-5 lineup (stampede, rustler, bandit) are around $180 they are 2wd, and are pretty tough. So that leaves some cash for batteries and a charger

What he said or a 2wd slash. It comes with a charger but it takes for ever to charge. Get the truck a better charger and another battery pack. In case you don't already know the higher the mah rating on the battery the more run time you will have.

If you're brand new to RC in general, start by reading [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9831202/tm.htm]this post[/link]. That will give you a good start. As for a good starter off-road truck, I have to agree with the others who have said Traxxas. The Stampede/Rustler/Bandit (all variations of a common layout) are great. They're very tough, decently fast for brushed RTR trucks, and very easy to work on or upgrade. The slash is a whole different platform, and also a very good truck (though about $50 more). There are other options in your price range as well - The evader is very cheap and often underrated, and the HPI racing Blitz and Associated SC10 are excellent SC trucks.

Do you have a local hobby shop or will you be ordering everything online? If you have a local hobby shop, go inside and see what brands they carry. That is going to be important for replacement parts. Even if you buy the RC cheaper online it stinks waiting a couple weeks for spare parts. If the internet is your local hobby shop, then Traxxas, HPI, Team Associated and Tamiya all make good RC's.

Where the heck are you buyin from?Hk's air mail?
Takes me 3-4 days to get parts when i order...[sm=50_50.gif]
Another vote for traxxas. If your willing to stretch a little, you could get the pede/rusty/bandit vxl and a accucel or dc6,imex etc for $350 ish.Or a slash for $200, hk bl system for $70, and be fine. Bl right from the start is so much better.Faster, more power, AND VERY little maintenance. Which sucks when your new and have no idea what your doing. And more room to open up the power later on,i.e, you want to go 60+mph get a pinon, spur, and a 3s and be done with it.Oh, and a temp gun.[8D] If you get the xl5, youll need more to achieve the same.Long story short, if you get the vxl out of the gate, itll be cheaper, easier, less headaches, and more fun later on.

another vote for traxxas XL5 versions they are very durable and affordable and water proof. stampede if you like big trucks, rustler if you like jumping and bandit if you like more speed and the buggy looks . also as mentioned the duratrax evader is a decent truck for the money . best bet is to head down to the local hobby store and see what they have there and what parts they support as stated if you have a local hobby shop

Another vote for traxxas XL5 models. Specifically I have to recommend the Slash. After running for a while you might get bitten by the racing bug and almost every track out there has a Slash class or stock SCT.

do you want to enjoy building it from scratch?
that way you know how to fix it?

or do you just want to buy it and run it right away?

I would say get the 2WD Traxxas Slash. It's cheap, easy and inexpensive to repair, and you can throw it against a wall and it won't break.

Take your time I would.  Purchase something RTR like a Traxxas or HPI staple and I would suggest if you're interested in nitro start there and then after about a year check out electric  I did it the other way around and other that I like the smell of nitro burning have I not gone straight electric because they're easier, less hassle, cleaner, quieter and all around more fun!  And these aren't your RadioShack electric RC cars!  Get a kit though when you have some time and take your time when you are looking for one there's nothing better to strengthen your skills than putting your rig together.<div>Hope this helps,</div><div>jbot.out();</div>
