How do you do it?

Ok, I was wondering how all of the younger people(15-18) do stuff financially?

I mean, I am 16 and I have a full size 1:1 car. My parents say "If you want to drive, you have to pay for insurance". For a year of insurance it will cost me $3,000 dollars. (Mind you I live in Miami, Florida.....so its going to be expensive)

I also have 2 RC cars.

So how do all you people do stuff, do your parents give you money?or what?

RE: How do you do it?

when i was 16, 5 years ago, i bought my own car, paid for my own insurance, had a dirt bike and played paintball with my own stuff every weekend and bought another new dirtbike when i was 17. i dont say those things to brag at all but moreso to let you know you're not the only one and that it can be done.

it's just a matter of having a good, honest work ethic and really wanting something bad enough fo go bust your ass for it.

RE: How do you do it?

how much were you paying for insurance?
did your parents give you money?

I have a good work ethic in my opinion

bkmademedoit 07-26-2004 08:09 PM

RE: How do you do it?

haha...only 900 a year for just the car then 1300 when it was the car and the bike. a bit less than 3000, but you know.

HPIRS4-3SS 07-26-2004 08:17 PM

RE: How do you do it?

$900 a year....thats nothing

1. have to figure $3000 intially
2.how ever much for gas (and that price is going up)
3. repairs (if anything goes wrong)

and then i have the 2 RC's to keep up

I worked every summer and winter since the age of 14, pay for my own RC but looking to get a 1:1 size car next year so hopups for my Rc and other expenses are on hold.
It just feels better when you know that you paid for it cos you worked for it and thats the reward..there is a certain pride knowing something is just yours[8D]

RE: How do you do it?

my parents are upper middle and they paid for half of my 1:1car which cost 6,000. I saved since i was 12 about 1,000 and haf a job during the summer and made another 1000. My grand parents and stuff gave me money for my birthday and i put all the money i had toward the car. my parents do pay for insurance, but if i get into an accident or get a ticket i pay the difference in the insurance increase. Been lucky so far.

The wat ihave spending money is from birthdays and cristmas i get sevral hundred from family, from there i dont buy stupid crap, I don't buy the coolest pair of shoes or **** like that. I also research what im going to buy and get the best price. I buy nothing on impulse. I waited 3 months after deciding i was going to buy a deck for my car, And i had only a radio for my first 6 months driving.

I spend a lot of oney on rc cars, paintball and othe hobbies. but im smart about my money and makesure i have some extra just in case.....

I'll tell all you young'ns one thing... buy everything NOW for your RC. I'm 29, married with 3 girls, 6,3,and 4 months. It took an act of Congress for me to spend the $200 on my used Duratrax Axis shoulda paid $50. Since then I read up on other buggies like Ofna, Hyper, etc. The Kyosho is like $700+ !!!!! My question is, how the hell are you guys buying these $500 cars, then $200 engines, then $250 radios?!?!?!?!? All I know is that 8 years ago, I'll bet I'da had a Kyosho or a Hyper, but now.... I'm stuck with my Axis :([:o]. Take my advice, if your hardcore into RC make sure you spend all you $ NOW!!!!

LOL I know what your talking about. I once walked in to Hobby Hobby and they were expecting $700 for a T-Maxx. The guy who owns this hobby shop is stinking rich and he runs this hobby shop as a hobby so I have no idea why he has to charge so much... I got a better deal at another LHS and the owner runs it as his full time job

I am 18 and have a hooked up 90' civic, 92 kx250 dirtbike, pocket bike, and about 10 nitro cars and trucks. I also just sold two 1/4 Raco buggies for about $900 on ebay. I know what you are thinking parents have a lot of money to spend on me. Actually I bought all of it my self! I have had two jobs for the past year ( out of school now). I work about 60hrs a week and only bring home about $300 a week. My car insurance is about $2500 a year, I have had two accidents a year ago. I still have a cell phone bill and a few other things to pay for. It is all just a matter of being able to work rather then going out and spending money all the time. If you have extra time on yuor hands, then pick up a part time job. Save up a bit of money every week and you owill be good to go.

We’ll no offence, but I think you’re all spoiled. I’m 15; neither of my parents have ever given me any money without me having to do something in return. I had to take a loan from my mom to my for my car, and I was only able to pay her back after Christmas and my b-day, which are close together luckily. I get paid 10 bucks Canadian (about 8 bucks american) a week to do chores, and they aren't easy, here’s my chore schedule thing that my mom made: Monday - bring garbage and recycle pails in from the curb & do laundry, Tuesday - empty all garbage pails and do kitty litter, Wednesday - Tidy room, Thursday - Vacuum basement and stairs, Friday clean main-floor bathroom. I only get 100 bucks for Christmas (well hundred bucks from my mom and 100 from my dad (their split up)) and 100 bucks for my birthday. The only way I will ever be able to afford this hobby is if I get a job this summer.

RE: How do you do it?

back in the day (seems like ancient history now) I actually had two jobs...
a hobby shop and Arby's. I paid for my own cars (at one point had 4 in my possession, two 86 thunderbirds, an 82 Jeep CJ7, and a '66 buick special rustbucket), insurance, and went to school, and worked about 40 hrs a week (20 hrs each job). with enough drive, you can do anything you want:D
and just remember one thing...it's never too early to think about retirement. if you put about 2 g's away each year from the time you turn 21 till you turn 40, you can have 7 figures in your retirement fund if you invest wisely. THEN imagine what kinda sweet RC gear you can get;)

Hi,

I'm 16 and i dont have a job. I have 3 R/C cars. I waited till i got the money for My Factory Team B3 it cost me about $500. I got My first car as a gift from my dad it was a Traxxas Rustler. And i got my latest car over X-Mas it was a RTR Factory Team TC3. All you have to do is drive your cars carefully and you wont have to buy parts for it. sure you need to put some money on the side for hop ups and addons but it is all worth it. all together i have probably spent about $800 on upkeep and tuneups and hop ups for my cars and i have been driving R/C cars for about 5 years. All you need to do is want it bad enough and you will get it.

:D:D I love the "and they aren't easy" part... :D:D

Looks like about 10-15 minutes a day, 5 days a week, roughly one hour total... you're making $10 an hour! Just put in a few more hours a week and you'll have an income!

I have 3 kids, and here's my take on it:
do you use the bathroom? you shouldn't mind cleaning it
do you wanna eat dinner? good - you should wanna clean the dishes that you ate on too
who messes up your room? oh yeah - so you might as well clean it up
where'd you put all the trash out of your room? ok - so ya filled up the trash can - go ahead and take it outside.
you don't wanna help with laundry one day a week? I'll trade ya - I'll do it one day, and you can do it the other six that I usually do it.

its not a hobby unless it cost money lol, and if you into r/c and you want to get good and race and compete you just have to scramble money togther for the stuff to make you get thier its hard at times but you gotta pay to play!

RE: How do you do it?

Yeah, I got to pay for EVERYTHING rc myself also. I'm 14, don't get an allowance and I have to work with my dad over the weekends or on school breaks. I usually have to work 2-3 weeks for the car I want and I usually get 2 a year If I workj hard enough. I usually get about 135-150$ for 30 hours a week. My parents haven't bought me ANYTHING even closely related to rc. And check out all the crap I have. But I've wasted like half my summer working for it.
