This thread made me have to do it.... Yet another wild willy and my first car kit in about 15 years! (mainly an airplane/heli guy). Already added bearings, a novak esc and a Venom 15d motor to it with a 20T pinion. Lots more fun than stock!! Mine's already been on it's head more times than I can count. No shelf queen here! I changed the servo saver to an Ofna CNC top, fits just fine. I'm using a Hitec HS-635HB servo for steering 'cause I have a few laying around.
What motor will this tranny handle without breaking?? I've got truck # 2 in the wings also, a blackfoot extreme which has what looks like the same tranny. Looking to change the motor & gearing on that as well, just trying to understand what the limits are for this tranny.
Also, what are people using for shocks on the Wild Willy?? the same ones will fit the blackfoot also, so I'm really looking for 8 of em.

Welcome to the club!! Make sure you post some pics of your WW-2 (and Blackfoot when you got it) when you got a chance!

For a 15T motor, I'd suggest you change the pinion to 18T, or you will overgear it! Since it is a brushed motor, I'd hate to see you burn up the brushes quickly.

I am sure the tranny is stout. It should be able to handle any motors that you want to throw at it. (running w/ 6-cells that it is)

Yeah, WW-1 has a great setup.. 2 coil springs.. not rigid so it actually rides the wheelie really well..

The drawback is that it would grind the end... I used to have to buy those separately, LOL, cause I grind them away quick.. man, the good old days when I used to drive my RC that often to actually wear something down.. ha ha ha ha!!

I know this is a WW2 thread, but I wanted to show off my "new" Wild Willy. Still need to add the grill, new rollbar and paint the shell. I have all the parts, just need better weather to paint.

Yeah, thanks for the offer, TEX!

I did get the suspension arms from eBay..

Did you open up the tranny and replace the bushings w/ bearings? The thing is, WW-1 pre-dates the standard 5x11mm / 5x8mm bearings that's being used in Tamiya kits nowadays.. so it uses those weird flanged bushings.. so might be hard to replace them w/ ballbearings..

We will see.. I have yet to open up my WW-1 yet...

I pulled apart the entire vehicle down to every single part and cleaned them. I didn't bother with the flanged bushings and I put new brass bushings in place of the old ones. I am not going to run it enough to need bearings. So basically I was assembling a brand new Wild Willy from the beginning. Being used to the manuals they have now, there were a few [sm=confused.gif] moments. The Wild Willy manual sucks, Tamiya has come a long way for the better! THe WW manual does not explain key elements for aligning the transmission components, nor does it have parts references.

WHen I get my hands on a better camera besides my phone, I'll get some more pics.

Interesting battery setup you had to go with on that one, just pulled apart a stick pack from radio shack I am guessing?

How did you mount the steering servo? Because it is supposed to go on top of the MSC servo, right? Did you just use a dummie servo in there?

Yup RS pack, the WW requires a hump configuration. I am using velcro to keep it in place, but the body actually serves that purpose.

I used an old servo that came in the box of junk with the WW when I got it off eBay. Same configuration as the manual states, just not plugged in. It has the old male pin style connector, not the J connector.

I also saved another Knight Hauler wheel for the WW too, but I think I might mount and extra WW wheel on the back.

Got it.. yeah, I might have to go the same route as well..

Did you use the stock servo horn?? Because it needs a special one, right?

I know your KH had the aluminum wheels, but those wheels did not come w/ tires, right? So did you buy extra tires? (just curious..)

Yes I did, but it did not have the brass collar that is bolted to the servo horn. I used a Tamiya standard issue M3 screw instead and it works quite well.

They actually did come with tires so I had six extra sets.
