I love high speed combat......but lately we've been having a blast flying combat at near walking speeds with some Pizza Box Flyers. These extremely simple 25 powered coroplast flying wings have proven to be extremely rugged, extremely maneuverable, and extremely slow. Perfect for combat with or without streamers!

The flipppin Disk is on the same line as the PB, not real fast but effective and fun.

For this pic I was hovering giving everyone a chance to hit me, I was hoit finally , it tore the left wing along one of the flutes the entine span of the disk, tore one elevon almost off and disconnected the pushrod for the elevon. I was able to continue the flight and land with only one elevon , but I do have rudder control. What fun it is.

I have been flying a flippin disc with 25 fp on it. Too much fun!!!!!
My best friend always wants to fly it and the boys in the club think its great,and it impressed Tattoo when he saw it. So good design Dave. Now the Pizza box is ready for its first flight,with a LA40 on it.So I`ll let you know.So Dave thanks for that design. If you guys have any more cool design let me know ,I`ll try them.

We tried some combat with our PBF's the other day when it was windy here in Kansas. We literally chased each other around for about 10 minutes. No collisions, but a few close calls. Kind of fun.

Could anyone send me some plans for a 25 size PBF. I also have a 46 OS that doesn't have a home. Is it to much engine for a pizza box flyer. Those things look like to much fun and I know they'll be a hit in our club. Just the spad combat itself has taken over the lives of more than 10 of our members

Thanks for the info on the PBF. I will no doubt put one together this weekend. I know you said that a 25 will work well. I do have 46 size motors that I'm wanting to use for something. Will it be to heavy. I have 40 size and 25 size but their in other planes now. If I were to use a 46 will it be to heavy for the plans you sent me. Since all my 46 size planes now have 4-strokes in them I have all these 46's I want to find homes for. Of course if you recommend not using a 46 I will steal a motor from another plane.

An OS 46LA would work fine on a 24x24 PBF, but a ball bearing 40 to 46 sized engine is really too heavy.

The PBF is really designed to perform best with the bushing 40 or the ball bearing 25 to 36 sized engines. And even with these engines, full power is only needed for hard maneuvering.

If you have to use a ball bearing 46, then you might want to consider enlarging the PBF to at least 30x30, or maybe even 36x36.

Nice design,but when I fly it into a hover ,when into inverted it goes into a flat spin.I have LA40 with 10 x 6 but going back to 10 x 4 and thinking of making stab tall to stop the inverted spin problem.I have CG at 5 1/2" standard servos for evalons and HS 225 for tail and throttle.It fun to fly except for the flat spin. Do you have any ideas?

Personally, I like the 10x4 much better than the 10x6 on a bushing 40 engine. It gives you much more precise control of the prop thrust.

As far as the flat spin, I'm assuming that you mean an inverted flat spin.

If you give the PBF full rudder while hovering with the elevator near neutral, it will often enter a spin.....sometimes upright.....sometimes inverted.....but usually not a flat spin. To get out of a normal upright or inverted spin, follow the spin recovery techniques on my PBF web page.

However if you hover the PBF nearly vertical, then apply full right aileron control and a just a little bit of up elevator, the PBF will often enter a very flat inverted spin. To get out of this, neutralize the rudder and aileron, then quickly apply full power and full down elevator, making sure that the aileron controls are neutralized. Your 40LA with a 10x4 should have plently of power to get the PBF to instantly exit the flat spin and enter a tight outside loop. After flying through 1/2 of the outside loop, pull back on the elevator stick to get it flying right side up again.

This sounds much more complicated than it really is. And once you figure out how to enter and exit inverted flat spins on command, they are a lot of fun!.....especially trying to see how low you can go and still recover!

I think what I'll do is steal the 40 from the trainer I use to teach and put one of the 46's in it's place. I'll use the bush 40 for the PBF so I can use your plans. For starters I always think it's wise to use what someone recomends. Thanks for your advise.

we used to build 36 inch "rountuit" type for our 40 and 46 engines......one inch foam and a box fuse of balsa with a ply firewall......flat spins were one of the "normal" stunts!!!!!

Could someone tell me what % of chord a round wing should balance at? I'm thinking of a 30" or 36" wing for a YS .45 that I have. I have some 1" foam handy. I think the engine mount and spine idea used on the PBF is superior to any box fuselage and ply firewall. I dropped my PBF from 50' straight down at full power from a split S and the engine mount did not break. It was a hard smack but I was flying again in 15 minutes. -Tom
