Default 2008 AMA Combat Nationals ( Videos )

There was a lot of great combat action this day in Muncie, IN. Here is a small sample of the 2548 Limited Scale Class. I accidentally spliced in a little 2610, but you get the idea. They typically ran .25 sized engines tached at 14,500K RPM max on the ground with a MAS 10X4 prop, had 48" wingspans, and weighed at least 3.25 lbs. The video doesn't even begin to do it justice, but I still hope you enjoy it. Best if viewed full screen hi-res.

Hey Blue Note,

Thanks for posting.

I have a question for scale combat gurus. I dabbled with 2610 a few years ago, and noticed its steady decline in popularity over the years, according to many here on RCU, and declining attendance at the NATS. It seemed like Open B was the most popular.

Anyway, one thing that bothered me about 2610 was the virtual disappearance of the US WWII warbirds (P-51, P-47, Corsair, Hellcat, etc) which were my planes of choice, with an emergence of some odd, less well-known planes, often from different nations (TA152, Blackburn Firebrand, etc) due to the advantages of longer wingspans, some of which seemed to approach the ridiculous. And even some PT-19s got in the mix ...perhaps the judges were lenient in the interpretation of the rules. I understand that 2610 is not exclusive to planes from the actual WWII era battles, but I always did identify those as "true" warbirds (just my own personal preference).

I never complained about carnage, or too much speed in 2610, but I do like the fact that 2548 levels the playing field with maximum wingspans, and maximum RPMs as well. Does anyone think that 2548 will gain more popularity over time due to these rules?

Seems to be the trend. With the growing price of Nitro also, I suspect we may see some changes in these classes. In my opinion, the limited classes are more fair since you can't buy your advantage. I found the open classes more based on flying skill and should be more fun for local clubs. Same goes with SSC, which is what I tend to try and promote locally ( along with 2548 and Limited B ). I also don't think it should matter if you're running a mousse can if you are still compliant with the RPM restrictions. If I can get the RPMs from 0%-5% nitro fuel with a mousse can as compared to having to run 30% with a standard muffler, my math points me into the direction of the mousse can muffler.

The Fairey Fulmar was definitely the plane of choice in the 2610 category due to wing span and area for maneuvering ( Blackburn Firebrand is no longer approved according to the RCCA rules - I know, I checked after doing a lot of research to try and find the best plane for the class). The Zero dominated the 2548 class as you may be able to tell from the still photos in the open sequence of the video.

I saw the heaviest participation in the SSC and Limited B and Open B events ( probably in that order ). Many people simply detuned the Open B planes and added a little weight to qualify for the Limited B division. I suspect we'll see several changes over the next little while if my fuel suppliers' info is correct. I have already been flying the SSC bird more due to it's lower fuel consumption and less damaging crashes. The biggest problem I see is building and maintaining a decent participation base. When people see it for the first time they almost always comment about how much fun it looks like.

Here is a clip of an SSC round at the AMA Combat nationals, I'll try and add each of these to the original post as they become available.

Do your cores come with spar material or anything else to complete the wing. If this is for just the foam your price is a bit high

Their cores might be a bit spendy but I bought a couple through his ebay store and they turned out to pretty accurate. Besides, he does have quite a few planes to choose from. I will buy more in the future
