Default Tightening a differential with thick grease?

I couldn't find any posts in the drifting section that talked about using thick grease to tighten differentials so I thought I'd start a thread. Just a little bit of backgroud, I have a TT-01 setup for drifting. It was drifting great until I started adding aluminum components which added to the weight. The rear planetary diff was too loose for the weight so it was only powering one rear wheel. The result was I could only drift clockwise. Counter-clockwise attempts only resulted in the car going straight (the front tires would do a shovel plow thing). I locked the diff by shoving pieces of foam earplugs in the diff. This resolved the issue. Shortly after, the front diff got too loose and resulted in spinning out a lot while drifting counter-clockwise. I locked the front diff in the same way and now I've got no problems drifting. In fact, the car probably drifts better now than ever before. One problem (I want my cake and eat it too), occationally I'll slap street tires on and race friends. Needless to say, with both diffs locked, my car skips around corners. A friend of mine suggested using thick automotive grease instead to get the diffs tight, but not locked. That way I could still drift and street race occationally too. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this or could suggest a thick automotive grease.

I am a Drifter, I find Running a Fully Locked Rear Diff Still allows me plenty of Handling when Racing..

I just Locked the Rear Diff with Blue Tac and It is Easy to slide and when I slap on the Rubber it Still handles good around corneres and Blistering Acceleration off the line, I use a Stock front Diff to allow for Braking on the front end as opposed to an open front diff or locked front diff..

Thanks for the input magnat. Based on your feedback, maybe I could've tried street tires with a little less grip. I think then the tires would've slid rather than hop.

For the heck of it, I picked up a $3 cartrige of bearing/chassis grease from NAPA an hour ago. I packed the diffs full. The diffs are definitely tighter, but not as tight as I hoped. I just tried it outside. It drifts good in both directions. I'll monitor it to see if the diffs loosen up over time.

You might try traxxas rear diff lube the set I just picked up has 3 different wieghts 10k, 30k, 50k although I'm using it for my truck it should do the same for you.

Thanks JFACKY,

After several drift sessions, the auto grease started loosening up and I ran into the same problems. I went to the LHS and picked up 50,000 wt. diff lube. It works great. So far so good. I think as long as the lube doesn't leak out, it should be good for a while.
