Locked Diff's...

I know this is kind of a touchy subject, but what do people here think about locked diffs for drifting? Lock the rear, or the front, or both? And after that, how do you actually do the locking of your differentials?

Only lock the rear. I found it made it alot nicer to drift after doing this mod. Not like it was hard with it not locked but now I can make it drift with more control. But then I really only put 30K silicone in to lock it. It locked it up really good but think it can still break free if under heavy pressure. But for drifting I don't see it getting a heavy load.. I say go for it and see what you think.. Just use something that can be removed if you decide you don't like..

So I'm sitting here at work, looking at the manual for a TT01D, looking at the rear differential gear assembly picture...
I see a larger gear that has a little "star shaft" with three smaller bevel gears connected to it that sits on top of it. Is that where you turn a gear backwards? Or where you jam something in to lock it up? Or is that somewhere different. And if that's really where you turn a gear backwards, is it one of the small ones?

I personally wouldn't try to lock the stock diff as you may want it later for some reason. Here is a solid axle (spool) like they're talking about, and it's only $12.50 plus shipping.

Excellent. I am going to order some stuff then. Should I get a ball diff for the front? I heard that that was good for drifting as well. And one more question...What is the difference between a one way and a solid axle?

A one way allows power to be applied in one direction only. So what that allows is for the front wheels to turn freely from the transmission when you don't have any power applied but once the rpms of the motor turns the one way faster than the wheels turn the one way you'll have power. It's like in a real car when you coast.

I agree with droppedgmc and druss. However, I have a work around for locking the rear diff without ruining it or causing permanent damage. I just took it apart, shoved some cotton in between the gear and one of the out drives, then tightened it down pretty good. If I ever want to "grip race" all I have to do is take the cotton out, re-lube, and re-tighten as necessary. I did make the investment of a one-way in the front. They're pretty expensive though, I couldn't find a one-way for under $45.

Setting up a drifter is personal preference..
I for one cannot stand a front one way... I like having full time traction.. makes it a little easier for me when doing transitional drifts on a tight course..
Its also Chassis dependant..
For my TT-01, Locked Rear Diff and Stock front End
HPI Sprint 2 : Stock Diffs front and rear
For my TT-01, I just Crammed Blu-tac (poster putty) into the rear diff till it was full, then re-assembled the diff..
Good thing with Blu-tac is, its more like an LSD then a fully locked diff.. So if you have a high speed accident into a wall, Drive energy can still be transfered through the Diff instead of the gears stripping..

I run locked front and rear, i find it very easy to hold an angle.
you can lock a stock TT01 dif with out wrecking very easily, just use the search there has been plenty of post. you just reverse one of the spider gears
it all comes down to preference, and what you think feels best. there is no wright and wrong answer.

That's the part that brings my confusion. Reversing the spider gear. When I looked up the parts list, and the exploded view, there is no "spider gear". I see the bevel gear and was thinking that was what people are talking about, but I'm not sure. I don't want to do something without knowing that it is what I am intending to do. Cause damage and have to buy parts anyway. Are these two terms equivalent? Spider gear and bevel gear?

Ok dont flame but im kinda confused.A spool will lock everything,a one way will lock when it has power to and then be able to coast?Couldnt the spool coast just as well?I dont understand how the gears could ever turn the ''other way'' please fill me in.Also how much smoother is a ball diff than a planetary diff and can they be locked?
