The brushes are the contacts in the motor that get current going through the motor and if your brushes are bad they wont make contact and you pushing your car makes them connect and start working i think this how this works not 100% sure but that's what it sounds like is happening to me.

you have a flat spot on your comutator, it happens sometimes with brushed motors if full power is applied while the motor is held from turning. if your motor can be dissasembled you might be able to clean up the com with a drill and emery paper to sand the copper bars back so they are all the same shape. if its a broken wire inside on the com then the motor is probably toast.

ok i took a better look at the pics, and your motor is able to come apart. remove the brushes (the 2 blocks held against the inner turning piece by springs), then remove the end cap, so you can see the piece that the brushes rub on, that is called the comutator. check for burnt stuff, back marks, broken wires etc. oh and take some pics of it all.

Why do you want to change your motor? I'm running a stock 15 turn motor in my car and I couldnt have wished for a better motor it has the perfect amount of torque and it gives me the perfect amount of speed. For drifting you want a motor that produces more torque than speed the higher amount of turns you go the more torque you get lesser turns in a motor more speed which is the opposite of what you want and or need stick with your 17 turn unless your really determined to get something else but remember just because a motor has more torque does not mean you lose speed everyone seems to think thats what happens no you lose a bit of acceleration thats all its not very noticable either

that motor you listed is garbage and a totally different size (way smaller, its a 380, your car runs a 540). hmmmm you can pull the back off of it by bending the tabs out (the little bits on the side that bend over and hold in the plastic end cap) i modded that picture to show you but photobucket isn't working for some reason

i have only read the first post so im not sure if u have solved ur issue... but, ur armature is bad. the standard brushed motor with have 3 rails on the armature. at any given time the brushes will be on 2 of the 3... when the motor stops and a brush is in contact with the bad rail u will not get power. spinning the spur a bit to relocate the brush to a different rail and the motor will power back up and spin until it comes to a complete stop on the bad rail...
u can replace the arm but thats only worth doing if ur running high end motors
