HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

I posted this on another forum but thought the more forums I get this on the more replies I'll get... Here's the scoop.

I am trying to get my setup right. I've noticed the good cars look like they are sticking to the carpet where I drift. Mine just slides around. It looks nice drifitng but I can tell its not sticking like the other good cars.
Heres my Setup:

HPI Sprint 2 Drift
stock shocks with 40 front and 40 back oil. dark green front springs (med soft) and flourescent yellow on the rears (softer).
Shock in front is very angled and the rears are less angled.
T-drift tires and are well broken in.
4300kv 9Tbrushless with Sidewinder 35amp ESC
Stock 87 Spur and 28t pinion.
6 cell Nimh 4200mah & 3300mah
Locked Rear diff

Any other suggestions to try.

Thanks
Ric

you need one way diff in the front, hard springs in the front as well, if it slides alot you may need to add weight to it in the front, use 50 oil in all shocks. also you might want to try a 15t motor to gain drifting experience first. www.sirclegion.com

Where do you guys find those bodies with the bucket head/tail lights? Looking for one for my Sprint 2 Sport. Also, are the bodies for the Sprint 2 Sport and the Sprint 2 Drift the same "MM"? Thanks, Joe

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

My Sprint 2 came with the 350Z GReddy body kit that has the buckets. You can get it directly from HPI. I think its around $30

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

One of the guys from another Thread said that alot of the Hpi bodies have the buckets in the front but not the rear, except for the NSX. I was looking for the Toyota AE86 body. I love that look and some of you guys have done some awsome jobs to them.

Hell I left my Sprint 2 Stock and went for a Set of Polypipe tyres..... then went with a Tamiya RZ Motor pulls of 15footers without an issue and will do switch backs without a problem..

Hey Mag where did you get the tires? They look like they have the perfect balance of both grip and slide. I always find it's either too much grip or too much slip.

Home Made Poly's

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

Well I got my Sprint 2 yesterday and the first thing I did was solider a Dean connector on the ESC. After that I wrapped the tires in electrical tape and took to the streets. All I can say is WOW!!! The tape gave me long smooth drifts with a great balance of grip and slide. All I need now is my bigger lipos to show up so I can drift longer hahaha. For now I'm going to stick with the taped tires but I would like to try the Hpi drift tires. I hear they have a few different componds to choose from. Well see............. On my old Sprint I used the Tamiya drift tires and hated the hell out of them. Way too hard and would just slide all over the place. I felt like I had no controll.

I have had Yokomo, HPI Stage D Type A's and still prefer my Home Made Poly's over both of them ..

Check out my Fan install. Let me know what you think. Works great and keeps temps way down. Powered by a small 900mah 2S 15C Lipo.

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

I am not a fan of Lipo when drifting.. I prefer the weight of a Nimh Battery... Gives the chassis more weight resulting in a tail thats easier to kick out...

I do Hope you are using a Lipo cut off with that ESC as I would hate to see what happens if the Voltage drops too low....

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

There is next to no drain on the fan lipo. With that 900mah fully dead it usually takes a good hour to charge. After having that fan on for 15-20 minutes, it only took 4 minutes to top if off. Rather nice if you ask me. But I think my temp problem is because the pinion is too big. I just counted it and it's a 28T pinion. I wanna drop to a 19-21T.

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

What drift motors are you guys using? I need some motor help. Just dropped to a 24T pinion and it didn't seem to help that much. Temps are still the same and she is harder to break into a slide. Think I need a bigger spur gear? I do have a 20T pinion on the way, but I cant do anything with it because I will need a bigger spur. Any help will be great, thanks guys, Joe

I've had good luck with a stock 27t brushed, Tazer ESC and a 27tooth pinion. But now I am running a 9t brushless with a Sidewinder ESC and a 20tooth pinion. My Sprint 2 is the red and blue car

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

In the video, is that with the brushed or brushless? Also are you running the stock diffs or the locked front/rear?

joystix 04-14-2009 09:48 AM

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

The video was shot before brushless change. Both front and rear locked

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

Are they the stock diffs that are locked or did you buy the front one way and that optional diff for the rear?

joystix 04-14-2009 10:44 AM

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

They are stock. I just opened them up and pinched rubber tubing in between the gears so they wouldn't move. It was suggested on another site.

I have this black stuff here at work, thats sticky and looks like playdo, I was thinking about using in there. Hahahaha Great now I have something to do tonight.

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

Hahaha Locked the diffs with that black puddy from work. WOW!!! She slides so much better now. I knew it would because that's how my last Sprint was but man I forgot how much better is was. Now that it slips-n-slides a lot eaiser I'm sure it'll help keeps temps down because I wont be on the throttle so much. Any other simple tips you guys can give me?

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

Joeyhatch, Congrats. The only thing I hate about the Sprint II drift was getting to the diffs. Its such a pain compared to the Cyclone, Losi Drift-R or the Pro-D. I cant think of anything else since I feel once its setup right it runs great. Heres a quick vid of mine on carpet where we drift. Its the second car, red/blue...

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

I NEED to up my Spur gear but the only thing I can find is a 93T 48P spur. I can't find 100T or better unless I go with a 64P. If I go 64P then Im looking at a 26T Pinion. What do you think? What are you running? I also didnt receive the new heat sink with fan yet to see how well thats going to cool down the motor. I did get my 20T pinion but I can get it on without pushing the motor too high into the belts. What to do, what to do?

joeyhatch11 04-15-2009 06:58 PM

RE: HPI Sprint 2 drift Setup????

So I just installed the 20T pinion and once I got it into place, I was playing with the belts. I found that although they are rubbing on the motor, they aren't adding any tension to them. Ran it around for a few mintues and temps seems to be about 15-20 degrees lower that with the 24T pinion. Still going to get the 93T spur gear though. I'm sure at that point I'll have great temps and more than enough torque to throw this thing around.

does anyone know where to get good and fairly cheap 1/10 scale touring car bodies that are 190 millimeters wide or 200 millimeters wide? PM me with any answers regarding this thank you much appreciated
