hi ian
did you use nails in your convertion ?
have you used the car with the new dog bones ?
if you have snow or rain when you take the cars out you may want to put ecs and reciever in balloons to keep them waterproof

I used split pins in the end and they fit very well.
I have given it a good test and so far so good.
One thing I notice with the esc is that you can get good speed in both forwards and reverse.
Obviously more speed in forwards.
Advice noted on the waterproof idea

hi ian
thats a good idea about the split pins i would never of thought of that
the truck i converted only had a small 380 motor so at top speed it was still a slow crawl
i used the radio gear i installed in the truck in the golden arrow i think that has a 540 motor and i must say its very quick and i wasnt ready for the speed
when the snow is gone or at the next truck meet on the 17 of jan which ever is first i will have to video it and put it on you tube

Just used split pins because that's what I found, no different realy to your nails Dus.

Yes put video up, tell you what when I get a chance I'll try and do one of the Bycmo.
Found this site a while back and some interesting covers etc:
http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...%3Den%26sa%3DG
Don't know what the black wire going to the msc is in one of the pics?

I noticed that your car runs the white cogs the same as mine, when the lad is used to driving it want to get him the faster cogs too.
The standard black cogs arent geared very well.
Also is it worth fitting a motor like yours?

Cheers.

hi ian
had a look at the photo's the top car is a tamiya tl-01

in photo 2 someone has made a cover for the gears i guess that is to stop anything jamming and stripping the gears

i would say the duct tape its very poor waterproofing but if it works i guess it could be used

in photo 5 the black wire that goes from the reciever to the msc is like a turbo you can see the battery pack next to the steering servo
on the throttle servo there is a drawing pin which touches the wire on the msc and the battery pack is also connected to the msc directly
so when its at top speed only it gets a boost of power and at any other point its only using the 6 cell battery pack

yes my car has all the upgrades i think the only reason im still on the first diff is i waited untill it was completed and had all the upgrades before i used it

hope that helps

Proper old skool that... the Grasshopper and the Hornet were both very popular back then.

It looks in excellent condition, did you pick it up recently and modify it?

The Hornet has gotta be from the 80's hasn't it.... very cool.

So the replica that you have modified would still be very old then.

hi ian

yeah the grasshopper and hornet were very popular they used to have them grass recing and dirt track racing back in the 80's

yes the golden arrow is in fantastic condition i woulds say it has never been used or has had very little use
everytime you open the box you get that brand new plastic toy smell of the 80's

we got them at the last truck meet we had we bought a job lot of tandy cars that dont work but with new electrics they will all be working
or i will get them working and use parts of them for other projects

the hornet and grasshopper were mid 80's i think the golden arrow is mid 80's as well

i would say the golden arrow i converted would now be middel aged as the chassis, body front bumper and wheels are all original and old but the electrics are new
and it still shifts and to be honest i wasnt really ready for how fast it is

Good fun to use in a bit of not too thick snow then.
You know the right people to find deals like this having your own meets etc.
I remember as a kid looking through the catalouges, Empire Stores / Kays.. whatever and wishing I'd get one of them.
Was some older kids with them that used to use them where we rode our BMX's.. back in the day eh

hi ian

the night/morning i converted the golden arrow i took it out in the ice/snow
it was 3am i just took ot on the grass outside the house and it was fun slipping and sliding with rooster tails of snow

lol i used to look through the catalouges too dreaming of what it would be like to have one
now im older i still look through ebay at the vintage cars and dream about what it would be like to have them

i used to go down to the local track and watch the old men driving there buggys on the grass track
and on very special occasions i think it would be bank hoildays
they would run the nitro cars to the tarmac track and i always wanted to own a nitro car and to date i have had 4 of them
sold 2 still have the g4 black magic and a kyoshe alpha tureten

BMX wow thats a blast from the past

My brother in law has had a few nitro trucks, wouldn't mind one some time.
I think a truck would be more fun than a car... as you are limited to a nice smooth clear car park or quite road to use a car properly (i think)

As for the cars in the shed I'll have the lot out when weather gets a bit better.
The Nikko one wasn't too hard to find.
The whole shed needs everything out anyway as it's a messthat's sort of the junk shed.

hi ian

i can see yoiur point about the truck/buggys i used to live next door to a guy who had a hyper 7 with a size 21 turbo engine
he was giving it all my buggy's better than your car and its faster it has a bigger engine so i said we should race thme on the road
my g4 has a size 11 engine with 2 speed transmittion we set up for a race on our street his wife did a count down 3 2 1 go
his buggy took off down the road it was half way down the street before i pulled the trigger my car took off high pitch screaming of the engine it caught up and passed his car in a matter of seconds then the second gear kicked it i made his car look like it was stationary he said he has never seen anything shift that fast before
i would like a buggy for off road but i know it wouldnt get used like the g4 that is now retired i dont think it will ever get used
i dont think it helps that im into the tamiya trucks

i think we all have a place like that somewhere in our houses i know we do its the shed and the loft [sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=lol.gif]

Is that mainly due to not having much space to use the gt4?
Remember you saying about that in an earlier post. There are a few fairly big car parks around here which are great when it's dry enough....just seems to be wet, wet, wet lately.

I can just see his face, haha, you blowing him into the weeds.

Have you got some nice pics of the GT4? sounds realy great.

hi ian

yes the space is a problem there's also no tracks around here and i think im just loosing intrest in the cars
as im really getting into 1/14th scale trucks although you can change some of the trucks there not as customizable as cars

i dont know if i have any photos of the g4 i will try get some if you want

hi ian
i may loose intrest in radio controlled cars but i will always love my bycmo car
i dont think that will ever change you can go out abd buy and build a tamiya hpi ect
but they are so common i think its because its not widely known it gives it that some thing special about it
i would be sad to see any of my cars go but i would sell them for a right price
but not my bycmo thats the one i wouldnt sell for all the tea in china

Well Dus, the knowledge learnt repairing the Bycmo is probably priceless.
Including the modifications etc, you couldn't learn anything like that by buying a complete car.
We both built them from scratch and know how they tick.

My sons one was built by parts from my old work mate and a complete car from ebay that was a bit ropey but electronically fine .

The workmates one had wiring problems and some melted.
The msc never did what you wanted it too either. So combining the parts made a real good one...

I'm sure that mine was like the film with the cursed car 'Chistine' .. remember? the red 50's car.

Seems alright now after fitting all the new parts, but my sons one has never overheated and never been a problem at all.

His is also still on the same diff from when I bought it and built it up from back in November. (unlocked standard diff)

Here they sit today:

Just incase you were wondering they both have various tyres,
The drift type.
The type that came standard with the Bycmo.
The full grip tyres (the ones on the front of mine)
Need to get the 12mm hubs to have a wider variety.

[sm=lol.gif]hi ian

everytime i see a bycmo car with out its bodyshell i always remember the joy it brought to me building it and the love i have for it
and with the knowledge learnt repairing the bycmo you now should be able to convert the cars in your shed and have a variaity of rc vehicles
all you will need is a servo, reciever, esc, crystals and transmitters unless you use the bycmo ones

you need to tell your son about not jumping into reverse to make the car skid as it will break the diff or gears and as he is on hs first gearbox it makes it even more special

you say my help has been brilliant
i just hope it has helped you and you can use it
and maybe help out others if there ever will be anymore on this forum [sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

You know Dus, I'd like to get the big Nikko buggy working for general blasting about.

You have seen how big it is (pretty big) and it has got the standard 7.2v battery pack.

It's on 27.225 crystals.. could I get some on the Bycmo handset? sounds a great idea.
