Default Kyosho Twin Force gearing mods

I am a student at Kansas State University who works as a lab assistant in an engineering lab. We have a Kyosho Twin Force 1:8 scale radio controlled electric 4WD monster truck. This truck is used as a test vehicle for a micro-controller. The micro-controller makes the truck drive by itself, following a pre-programmed path. The truck is geared too high for our purposes, so we need to gear it way down from its stock 21.7:1 gearing (entire drivetrain as specified by users manual). We might need to gear it down about twice as low as this so it isn't as fast. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to do this? Does anyone make optional gear sets for this truck? What other possibilities exist for accomplishing this besides swapping gears? Where could I find custom parts for this truck? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

you should be able to change your spur/pinion combonation to get you as low as you want. if you dont have clearance, i would think you should have a mechanical/electrical machine shop that could make you some new parts. at my university, that sounds like a project for the mechatronics class, which possibly would have a motor that has a gear reduction built into it. the ones we use to have were like that, they were about the size of a 540 or 550 and were geared like a mother.

Thank you for the suggestions. Do you know where I can find gear sets and/or gear reduction motors? Any good websites on this? Thank you.

www.towerhobbies.com and www.horizonhobbies.com

you will need the smallest spur you can find - i think the smallest is around 50t. 32pitch.

you will also need 12t pinions. the smallest fit-able with the stock motor plate is 15t, but with a little dremel work you can fit 12t. 32pitch again.

the best way to drastically reduce speed is run the motors in series [7.2v each] instead of the stock parallel [14.4v each].

top speed will reduce to 6-10mph with the above small mods.
