Anyways, back on topic.
Deans are not necessary, they're pretty much the same as all other upgardes !
They'll permit more electrical current going from your battery to your esc/motor. Less will be lost in heat. As you probably already know, nothing is created, nothing is lost. So the energy that doesnt go to your battery or esc is transformed into heat.
Heat doesnt help you, it robs you of power. You will eventually need them if you go to lower turn motors (good ones, orion v2, sv2, reedy, trinity... etc etc not really venom and cheap ones.) These motors will draw a lot of amps from your battery and could potentially melt the tamiya style connectors. (Happened to me...)

Thing is the connectors are required on everything higher than a 2200 Ni-Cd pack... If you start running longer run times the heat builds up and melts connectors... NOT FUN

Neither the number of cells nor the amount of capacity will determine the nessecity of a low-loss connector like dean's. Although both may increase the need indirectly.
The current being drawn will determine the nessecity of a certain connector. I use the powerpoles in the 30 and 15 amp flavor. Most racing application will require a good connector if one wants to use a connector.

Doahh, are you suggesting that Deans connectors are needed for everything higher than 2200 Ni-Cd? If so, NOT true. I have run 3 consecutive battery packs through both my Pede and Rising Storm, 3000 NiMh and 3600 NiMh packs, mind you, without melting any connectors.

Ah, okay, I see where you are coming from now. So when I upgrade to brushless it will also be necessary to upgrade to all Deans, you think?

Also the original Molex 'Toy Car' battery connectors (yes, that what the manufacturer calls them) that everyone uses for batteries get looser with each insertion since they rely on the strength of the metal they are made on and not a spring forcing the surfaces together like a Deans plug. They will get higher in resistance with each insertion until they overheat and melt eventually even with a stock motor. They are only rated 15 amps maximum when new.
If you are careful you can use them for a reasonable amount of time but their 'insertion life' is far shorter than the Deans plugs (they, too wear out but at a far slower rate). The Molex website doesn't list the the number of insertions that is considered the life of the connector but their resistance measurement in the durability section of the data sheet is made after only 10 times of plugging and unplugging it - I have to think that's not a good sign.

I was running my stampede with a reedy quad mag motor and the stock connectors melted together, so I bought a set of 10 male and 10 female deans plugs off a guy on ebay called world_hobby. Ships from hong-kong but the plugs got from there to pennsylvania in 5 days.

I think upgrading connectors should be a big priority. I used to have a rustler w/ stock setup and venom 3000 battery. I didn't melt the plugs together but I could see they were geting black from being burned. that's when I switched. One of my friends had a 27t motor and 1500 nicd battery and his plugs melted. In other words you should upgrade before they melt and save you the trouble of gettin them apart.
