LOL, anything to hold her together!

Well, anyway, gave the Hornet a nice test run. As you can see in the pictures below my top speed was 26.6mph. This is a far cry from the 18.3 mph with the stock Mabuchi. The thing really cooks with the 2400mah Wolfpack, and of course the Grasshopper rear tires definitely help a lot on pavement. Although in my opinion this hobby is all about speed. That is why I modded the Hornet with the fastest motor I could find out there!

I have an old hopper frame that I took in trade that has the FX 10 double wishbone kit on it. It looks pretty hacked to make it fit. Never finished. looks like I 'll need to make a shock tower to do so. here's a few pics. If you want more let me know.

pm'ed thanks Nick, im curiouse to see how this motor drives with good batts. ill think he'll have plenty of time to learn some skills with 45 minute plus drive times

Shipped the motor yesterday on my lunch break. Left from Groton, CT post office, the guy said it would be 2-3 days.

TornadoGuy: Thats some pretty good speed for a car from the early 80s

got it 2 days ago.. put it in and took it to the local park. been a long time since i ran my hornet. lasted every bit of an hour with a 4600 spc racing pac, actually jack got tired before it died and it was time to go. i was suprised at the torque but that could be because of the 11 tooth pinion. perfect amount of speed for a yougin in a large area. my pistol grips are a little too much for the boy so im searching for an old school stick control. we'll see what he can do with that.. thanks again 860!

I finally got around to fixing up the body.. to match the aftermarket wheels, tires, bumper, motor, speed controller.. though I might but the fireball back in it to see how it does with the new speed controller..

Any advise on motor maintanence? Like when to replace the brushes.. how to go about it correctly?? Mine aren't wearing very evenly.. probaly because I learn the hard way on how to take care of stuff.. started using buddy spray and putting a drop of oil on each one.

Mmm, nice thread. Might as well bump it up instead of posting a new one...

I bought this baby for 60 bucks, almost RTR... Good deal, Vintage 1984 but beat up. Currently trying to figure out some third shock on the gear box to keep it from moving up and down when accelerating, and seeing how everyone wants front oil filled shocks, I figured I might attempt something like that with a RC18 clone Shocks (the propulse).

Here she is.

that bumper attracts bees

Worn out rears

Old batt pack that came with it....

MSC

Ok, the body broke along the back end, I fixxed it up with styrene, super glue, and electricians tape. Will be my beater body and shelf body until I get a new one....

and.... the rear body mounts were either sanded off, or scraped off somehow. How do I fix it without buying a whole new chassis? I was thinking about drilling a hole, and then sticking a screw up to act as a body mount.

and the fubar front stock tires.

Any advice? I want to make my own aluminum nerf bars, but I don't have alum tubing.

It also is running a stock motor, I also need some sheet alum to fix some things up.

Those are some funky looking tires!
What do you mean when you say the gearbox goes up and down when you accelerate? Do you mean it sqauts down? Maybe you need to refill the shocks?

You used to be able to get a new chassis pretty cheap. Not sure if they still list them on tower

Oh... when you accelerate, the front part of the gear box slides along the side holding chassis parts. The rear shocks are fine. I might be thinking of going Grasshopper body, since I don't really like the Hornet body, just gonna bash with Hornet body. The body is poorly cut anyways. Im using a FM Pro Pulse RX and TX. ._.

Sounds like the pivot points where the gearbox is attached to the frame is worn?

Yes, that... I sucessfully installed the shock, but it is too long, limiting travel, im going to have to take it off and buy a front RC18 shock, but everything fits. I also need bearings and new tires, any recommendations? Im mostly onroad, with occasional offroad. Sand Paddle might be one choice, for the front, I want the stock tires, rear, I think either sand paddles or slicks. Im trying to fetch a few chassis's from ebay and do a front shock swap, but im still not sure... The grasshopper bodies are way too pricey on ebay [:@] , anyone have any for sale? I will be making another Tamiya 1/10 Scale purchase soon, im still undecided. Thats it for now. Thx

Check towerhobbies that's where I got a spare hopper body. They also have the stock tires for the front and you can get either the stock spikes or the Padlatrak tires from the hopper

I just checked tower and only the XB Grasshopper was listed and the parts listing doesn't show the body for sale there anymore. Should still be available someplace like tamiyausa.com though. The padlatrak tire are definitely still available because the new Sand Scorcher re-release uses them

I have an interest in there tires:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-TAMIYA-F...item5637685e22

but
1. why are they red
2. are they colored stock ones? ._.

and this expensive anti-roll bar.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tamiya-Hornet-Yo...item45ef810643

1. does it clip to the front suspension?
2.Will i be able to custom fab one? Looks like you can

Replacement steering links

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tamiya-Hornet-Gr...item439baf15e6

who has them? Looks worse than the stock ones.

These alum rims:

http://cgi.ebay.com/tamiya-super-cha...item1e5940802e

i've seen them come up everywhere in this thread. Is it actually worth 50 dollars? almost as much as i bought this hornet for?

These bearings:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tamiya-10pcs-Gra...item5188430198

they any good?

Grasshopper Body

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-BODY-Grassho...item35a4edeadc

rip off? ._. seems way to expensive for a dam piece of molded plastic

and Where can i get some decent sheet alum, that isn't to thin or too thick to cut, I want to custom fab a new front bumper or add a new skid plate.

I ask too many questions, Hornet 1st 1/10 RC
