I hear the Dark Impact handles a lot better and can be made into a decent racer. The Dark Impact is 4WD I am not sure if the Rising Storm is. Let the experts chime in.

Both the dark impact and the rising storm are 4WD but the dark impact is a much better buggy. It can be raced at the club level and it's pretty durable as well. the drivetrain will take anything you wanna put in it from a mild brushed motor to brushless on 3S lipos with very little problem. The rising storm is a very good car too but it lacks some of the better parts found on the DI. While you're looking the Tamiya avante MK2 and the keen hawk are all the same as the DI. The only difference is the body and wheels. If you're not in a big hurry and can spend a couple more dollars tamiya is getting ready to release the Durga. Everyones saying it's the next true racer from Tamiya but no one knows how well it'll hold up to abuse.

or if you've got alot of money to spend, i'd get the 501x, but if you get either the DI or the durga, you will want and need to upgrade the shocks and get slipper clutches regardless of whichone you get, because they both have crappy shocks, and they don't come with a slipper at all.

I don't know much about tamiya kits, but have you looked into a losi or team associated kit

The durga is basically a plastic 501x, so if you bash at all it would be a much better option. The rising storm is just as durable as the dark impact, but the dark impact looks and drives better, plus it has a little better parts support.

I'd say the Durga, as the DF02 chassis isn't as good of a handler or anything, but the Dark Impact won't take SxS. The Durga is basically a 501X but cheaper, so I'd go with it.

Both jump pretty good, but the DI will flat out smoke it in a race.
I have the gravel hound and the dark impact so I enjoy both.

Like bmaglinger I have both.

The DF02 is tough as nails, but the DF03 is a better bet if you want some back yard racing. The DF03 has better shocks, can run a slipper clutch and has a better layout than the DF02. The DF03 also has many more hop up options than the DF02.

The cars are basically a generation apart. But both of them would be a world of fun. And that at a fraction of the cost of a Losi, AE or Academy buggy. Interestingly, the guys recommending those expensive cars don't list that they own a Tamiya. Normally Traxxas kiddies. But hey. It takes all types does it not.

All that said, I think it would be worth while to wait for at least an review of the Durga before you buy. Looks like it is going to be a really nice little buggy that.

I like how the battery tray is setup on the DF-02. It looks like on the DI a 6 cell pack is all you can run.

Yes, the battery bay is very tight on the DF03. You have many more battery options on the DF02. But you do get extended chassis options for the DF03 that let you run much more powerfull packs. Monotuning makes a very nice chassis for arouns $25

Here is a very nice CF one

So as you can see. There are many many oiptions here.

The two buggies are a world apart. I have raced a DF03 and than some minor setup issues(my fault) the buggy has no problem on a track yet it is just as happy out in the backyard jumping and bashing. There is a nearly endless supply of upgrades available for the DF03 as well.

Cut to the chase. Get the Dark impact. I have the Keen Hawk and a friend has the Dark impact. He is 16 and I am 45. We love them and they are nuts. My 10 year old son keep stealing my Keen hawk and I end up with the Grasshopper. The body of the dark impact has more space in it than the other DF03 bodies so you can put standard radio gear and ESC into it. They take a real beating and the kids just use them every where, Off road and on road racing. If youve got extra Bucks then spend away on a better motor etc but we love them straight out of the box. If your worried about building, dont. My 16 year old God son built his with no problem. my 10 year old would be able to build it as the instructions a great.

Yeah, I've seen the new durga and dont much care for it. But I have a Dark Impact, it's just a blast to just drive around.
I like shaft driven cars better. The belt drive is good, I just prefer shaft drive.

Horses for courses I suppose. The whole Belt vs Shaft debate I mean.

I love my DF03, but then I feel just as strongly about my DF02. Seeing that both Tamiya buggies I own are that good, I am pretty sure that the Durga will be as well. I think it will all depend on the price of the Durga.

Whether it will be able to compete with the DF03 or not, but that is purely my opinion.
