do you need a balancer, as in you cannot charge lipos w/o one - answer = no
or
do you need a balancer because it's the easiest way to charge lipos and be sure the charge is right - answer = yes

i've been running 2s + 3s lipo for 2 years and seldom used a balancer
i just check the individual cell voltages and as long as they're within a few hundredths of a volt i don't worry
if they get off a bit, then i balance them for a couple of charges

a balancer just detects if one cell reaches full charge first and stops charging it while the others finish.
so if all the cells are charging at the same rate a balancer is not needed.

so, is a balancer absolutely needed - no
is one a really, really good idea - yes - especially if you're not anal in your charging practices

Have you got a charger yet ? I find the Cellpro 4s from FMADirect works great and has the balancer built in. It charges the pack through the balance plug, and charges each cell independently. IMO the best way to balance. Inexpensive too.

For $20 cheaper you could get the Triton 2 which is able to charge up to 24 nimh/nicd cells and 1/5 lipo/li-ion cells. But be prepared to buy a seperate power supply.
