Tim your better off buying the Real Flight simulator for your son, the Nextar sim's graphics are fair at best and the Real Flight has way more planes to keep the interest going.
also if you go to the www.knifeedge.com site theres a ton of planes to download for free, the RF sim also comes with a simulated transmitter so you don't run your batterys down on the real transmitter all the time.

Yup, suggest the full sim or if cost is an issue, you can find used ones around the forums just make sure it's at least a RF 3.0 (which can be upgraded to ver. 3.5 for free online) or higher version. The computer hardware requirements for the RF software go up in a hurry after 3.5. If you do buy used, make sure it has the controller as it won't work without it and that the previous owner has "un-registered" it with Real Flight or you cannot get any updates or support.

Real flight is very good but also very expensive. I use a sim called clearview and it has a lot of what real flight does but is only $45. If you are willing to spend more money get real flight.
