Default FMS vs G2

I've seen much discussion on this board about these simulators, but has anyone done a comparison of the two ? I currently have FMS and am considering getting G2 and would like your opinions. Those of you who have both, which do you choose to use when you're sitting at your computer and have equal choice, and why ? How realistic do you find them compared to your own plane models ?

There is absolutely no comparison here. G2 wins in every possible way.
Lets say 100 to 1 even on a slow computer.
If you even get the chance to try G2 at a Friends or LHS you will see what i mean .
I am not a G2 salesman, Just someone who has tried them all and will tell you that this will be by far the best investment you will EVER make in the RC field , be it for Helli's or planes.
You will also love the extensive aircraft parameters that you can adjust. which will also teach you a lot about how to set up and adjust your real Plane or Heli. And then theres the Multi player features wich i Personally use quite often, which will allow you to fly with others(some well known names i might add) online and learn how they perform the difficult maneuvers like torque rolls, rolling circles and what not..........

Yeppers! I agree with sal98
I run both as well/. But G2 WAY more like 99 % more.
WAY BETTER! both will run on XP and also you can use
the G2 Controler for FMS as well.
hope this helps

I have never tried FMS, but I bought G2 after I had been flying over a year to help me practice - so I wasn't trying to learn how to fly. I was amazed at how realistic the program is. It is great and I would highly recommend it.

Find the host IP: address and dedicate a port to it.
It will get you out from behind your router so you can fly!

Peace,

The linksys router has something called a DMZ. This option tells the router to treat a certain computer as if it was outside your router/firewall.

1. figure out which IP your computer is on (ex: 192.168.0.1).

a) In Win 9x , click start=>run=>winipcfg (use the drag down menu to select your ethernet card).

b) In windows NT/2000/XP click start => run =>cmd , and then type ipconfig at the DOS prompt.

2. Use your manual that came with your linksys router to enter the menu of your router and set up the DMZ.

If you have any questions about this, please PM me or give me an email and I"ll explain further.

good luck!

WOW, GUYS I am going to totally dissagree here, I personally feel G2 sucks, well ok, FMS is the best I've seen and yes it is totally adjustable from gyro sensitivity, to thrust, head speed, cylic control movement, rotor blade weight and lenght, etc, etc.etc. now granted as the free download version it is very basic, but with a few simple upgrades it is a equal to G2 but still free but with 2 main advantages. 1 it will run on a BASIC COMPUTER with no problem, 2 you get better depth perception on the heli..
their are 2 disavantages though, 1 you can't see the individual blades of grass and crowds of people, 2 you can not do autorotations real well.

so for $200 g2 gives auto's and grass.
free fms gives some awsome fields with the limbo, pilon racing, competition training fields, some awsome graphics on the heli itself on mine you can see the radio through the canopy (sweet)
Most of the upgrades are in Japanese, but I got G2 and have tossed it in the can, and yesterday, my buddy tried it for the first time, he also had G2, well, he took my copy home and is selling his G2 on ebay. G2 is still a good sim but just not worth the $$$ when you consider you can get the advanced versions of FMS free, but most people just don't know it's out their

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU FROM, and what speed computer did you play G2 on(Must have been an old pentium pro with the intel 815 onboard graphics that you feel in some insane sense that its just as fast as any new fangle computer they have out nowadays)
Not trying to diss but come on you make it so easy.
If you tried the two on my computer you would see how off that reply really is

Pentium 4 1.8g,17 inch moniter, nvidia 64 graphics, 200+ meg ram, computer right out of the box. and I did say g2 graphics are better. but only on scenery, and if you read my post I did say FMS in its original version is just ok. now if you get the upgrades, I found them in Japan. it is very good, still does not have the individual blades of grass and the crowds of people. but the updaded versions are at least twice as good as the original versions of FMS that you would have seen. again I STATE tihs is just my opinion, ooh and of course my flying buddy. we both perchased G2 with great expectations and I threw mine in the TRASH, he is selling his on ebay. call us crazy, the heli's you can get from japan, blow away the graphics of the g2 heli's on their disk ( you must be able to get better ones online), on mine you can see the radio thru the canopy and the controls. they have real good training fields. if graphics is what you want stick with G2, if you want a great all around sim give FMS a little credit, what do you expect from a FREE sim, you do need to modify it. but the depth perception on FMS is better than G2, But even the updated FMS does not auto real well, but in about 10 minutes you can set the heli to fly just like what ever you fly, just like G2
SO I say this only because G2 =$200 and FMS free, ok now you can buy a lot of gas for $200 so DO THE MATH is G2 200 x better not likely, is it twice as good maybe to some but for most it may only be slightly better and just not worth the extra cash, ooh unless you are some computer freek, then what are you doing in R/C heli's anyway, I have been flying since 1987 I spend about 1hr a week on the sim, I use it as a tool not a life, my buddy has been flying since june of this year, he spends about all day on the sim he is using it as a lifesaver, and he has the cash to blow, but not everyone does, just remember that, I try to give the pluses and minuses, I am not pushing anything so don't you either. be realistic

Ok, I know this is off subject a bit but please DO NOT setup your machine as a DMZ. You might as well not even run the firewall if you do that.

You need to:

A) Figure out what port G2 is using.
B) Route a dedicated port to your IP address through the advanced menu.

You can even do this if you're running DHCP if you only have one computer... Just get your IP as tmproff suggested and route the port to that IP.

I agree with lnorris, it's not a great idea to keep your computer on the DMZ permenately. Your computer is unprotected aginst hackers. I often set my computer on the DMZ to host games of this sort, and after I'm done, I remove myself from the DMZ. (heh, I know that 98% of the people out there are reading this and saying " what the heck are these guys talking about???) Anyways.....PM me if anyone has a specific question....I'd love to try to help.

Did you disconnect the router or not?

1. I would go in and release the IP within the router settings
2. I would unplug the router and put your DSL modem directly into your computer
3. Click Start=>Run=>cmd
4. type ipconfig -release
5. Hit Enter
6. type ipconfig -renew
7. Make sure you still have internet connection
8. Try G2

So If and when this works one day? You do the search or know the IP then say use this and wait for the other party to exept you? or do you just fall in> ? And it brings the plane that you have open in g2 with you ect?

NO clue I'm only a Network Engineer....dont own G2....I would assume that the person that is hosting would provide his friends with his personal IP (just type Ipconfig at the dos prompt to get yours). Then somewhere in the G2 Menu you will have the option to join a multiplayer game and a place to put the Host IP.

Hey, I'm all for Linksys router/firewalls. I have one because I have several computers throughout my house. Besides it's smaller than the old computer I had doing it.

I was just saying that keeping your computer set as a DMZ host is dangerous. You might not care about someone messing with your system but it can be annoying for others. I can't tell you the number of computer I've had to "take off line" because someone hacked them and was using them to attack one of my web sites. Usually Windows machines on some kind of broadband.

And that is just one aspect of it. Do you buy things online ever? Think it's safe on a hacked computer?

You're doing it the right way though. I just mis-understood what tmproff said. :stupid:

BTW, I'd see you online if I knew if Wine (basically a Windows emulator) would run G2 but...
