RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I think you'll find that the planes are all Horizon ones.
I have a question about the transmitter icon images.... I've been trying to insert an image for my Futaba transmitter into the list of possibilities so that I could assign it when I edit the Tx. I can copy one of the existing JR Tx images and rename the file so that the name and the JR image show up in the FS One Tx selections, so I thought I could just edit the image and replace it with an image of my T7CAP but this doesn't seem to work (at least not doing the image file edits that I did). Does anybody know if there is a secret trick to editing the image? Thanks, Dave |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Why is it taking Interiasoft so long to release the expansion pack and noteworthy updates? A friend of mine bought the F-22 PTS system from Hangar 9 today and it comes with FS One Solo... to our suprise the sim did not come with the F-22, just a high wing trainer and P-51. To ad insult to injury, I read a review on the F-22 written in April 07 that stated Horizon will be release a model of the F-22 for Fs One shortly. Here we are in Sept and no model. *sigh*

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
The F-22 is downloadable from the FSOne website.

Thanks, Dave Actually, it's pretty simple. 1) Get an image of the Tx you desire. 2) Convert the image to TGA format (using something like Photoshop) 3) Adjust the size of the image to 256x256 (be sure to do this or it will not work as a Tx Icon) 3) You may want to add an alpha layer that is a mask (if you know how to do that, but it's not necessary) 4) Save your file, giving it a name such as: myCoolTx.tga (be sure to use .tga file extension and do NOT use compression) 5) Copy your file to Graphics\RadioEquip\Controllers in the FS One installation folder. At that point, you can start FS One and edit your transmitter. From the Edit Transmitter menu, you should select the "Tx Icon" button near the top of the screen. This will allow you to select your new Tx Icon, which should now appear in the list of possible Tx Icons. Simply click on your selection (you should then see your Tx Icon that you created) and click Select. Next, click on "Ok" in the top right. There will be a pause as your new Transmitter data is written to disk. You will now see your new TX Icon for that radio. |

ORIGINAL: Michaelvg11 It seems as if there are not many planes with FS One... I have a QQ YAk and all of the sims have it except fs 1. Am I missing something? Are they just Horizon Planes? Michael |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
ORIGINAL: RealtyViking MSelig, Regarding post 1203 where you said "I could talk about the physics, but I'll let the videos do that." I for one would be extremely interested in your opinion on the physics involved comparatively in the different simulators recognizing that you are one of the FSOne developers. I did some cursory internet searching and would say that your qualifications, if good enough for NASA research among other projects, stand on there own. I have already been impressed with the ability of your product to translate to the field better than the other programs I have significant experience (RF G3.0-3.5 and FMS). I would like to know how you were able to do this while the others were close, but missed the mark? I know you have worked with Real Flight in the past specifically with G3.0 so you have the insight and have probably compared the others to videos. Would you mind sharing since the aerodynamics and acurate physics seem to be your products niche in this growing market? I do not expect you to slam the others and understand that this would be one sided, but it would be interesting for myself and others that are considering purchasing a simulator. Thanks First, I don't know what's inside the other sims. When it comes to RealFlight, they did include the UIUC Airfoil Database in their latest version and that comes under the GNU GPL. They presented to me some paperwork to sign so that they could include it in G3/3.5/etc, but I said 'no' it's GPL which means anyone can use it freely ... and they have. They do acknowledge UIUC/me. Maybe that's why you thought I once worked w/ RealFlight. I've not worked with RealFlight in any way. I maybe came close one day when I was at Hobbico and told some of the management what I thought they needed to do to improve RealFlight. They did not follow through with any of that. I don't think they understood it. One thing that's helped in developing the aero side of FS One is that there's 'no fudge'. If things are fudged at one point and then another point and another, etc, it becomes totally impossible to figure out cause and effect. I learned that by working on cars - keeping old ones running. If one thing breaks, it needs to be fixed because otherwise when a second thing breaks and then a third, etc, it's hard to figure anything out with all the interactions. One benefit of taking this approach is that when things did not work, it meant that some element of the physics was missing or wrong. So that would start a cascade of debugging (either code or physics). As things progressed like this, many new aero phenomena were figured out and also new approaches were taken to solving old problems. At one point halfway through I counted 14 things that were different than past methods and know-how. So in this sense there are A LOT of "trade secrets" inside the aero part of the sim. For the most part these things came out of having to solve the 3D aero problem where the flow can come at the airplane from any direction while the plane is spinning/doing whatever. That kind of thing is not encountered in the standard aero textbooks, so it required developing a lot of new things. The fact that FS One can do plausible spins that mimic real video/planes says that something under the hood is very different. I don't think there's any other sim that can do the spin problem so robustly w/ myriad configurations. An interesting example there is as things were developing on the aero, I was always wondering how I'd ever sort out the 3D blender maneuver (inverted flat spin). Then one day I jammed the sticks a certain way and 'bam' things got into an inverted flat spin. So that gives you some insight that really on some level I actually don't know how all this aero stuff works, yet I wrote the code for it! I don't know if that answers all your questions/thinking, but off the top of my head that's what I think about when it comes to comparing things with other sims (including full scale sims). Postscript: I think Hobbico is still missing the boat on the things I mentioned years ago to them. I can say that now w/ a bit more certainty. Of course, all of this is my opinion. Also, on my own side, I know there's more to do and understand on the aero side. VPP! Michael |

Mike,
Good of you to explain the thoughts and trials behind your development work. I've never used the other sims, so I have nothing to compare FSOne to. It's good to know that you still get a kick out of explaining things and developing them. Keep up the good physics? Scott H |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I just picked this up and so far so good. I find the CX2's performance unrealistic because it's too aggressive and powerful compared to its RL characteristics. I also find that if I modify any of the parameters of the aircraft, it will load then crash the program. It's too bad.
Anyone flown the other helis in FS One and is it realistic? I may actually be influenced by the simulator in my next level up helicopter based on how they fly. I really like the way the JR Voyager handles but I can't seem to find this heli for sale anymore... must have been an old model. |

Michael
I have the FS One Solo I got with my P51 PTS. Can I inport my P 51 from the solo version to the full version when I buy it? The full version says it has the P51 150 but I have a feeling it will be diferent the the PTS. I know the real things fly a lot different. Larry Never mind, I just found out that the PTS can be downloaded from FSONE website. |

I really like the way the JR Voyager handles but I can't seem to find this heli for sale anymore... must have been an old model. I own a T-Rex 450 and have also flown a Blade CP Pro. The Blade CP is in FS One, I would say they did a reasonable, but not great job of modeling it. I have yet to find anything very close to the T-Rex 450 in FS One. The similar sized JR electric flies very poorly, much harder to fly than my T-Rex. I have been using the 50 size glow power JR heli, it is the closest to the T-Rex that I have found, which is pretty disappointing. I'm glad I bought a flight sim to help with learning to fly heli's. I'm now up to doing figure eights on my T-Rex, and I know the sim has helped. However, I'm not so sure I would buy FS One, the lack of meaningful updates, poor documentation and very limited selection of models is very disappointing. If the expansion pack doesn't come with a reasonable selection of non Horizon planes/heli's I will probably have to look at selling FS One and buy something else. I also have the problem where if I modify the attributes of a heli, the program crashes. I also crashes after being left running for around 15 minutes. They could have at least fixed these major problems in a patch. Malcolm |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I just got the Horizon Hobby catalog in the mail today, the expansion pack is available, or so it looks like it. I didn't look really carefully, but it had a price. And of not for heli pilots there is a Trex 450SA in the pack. Least I think so. Page 24 part number HANS4010.

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
It'd be even nicer if I could download the Hangar Pack. But I don't see that as an option.
Scott H I still need to deal with my below minimum spec hardware! |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I see the long awaited Hangar Pack 1 is on the Horizon website. All of the months of waiting and statement after statement of how much work was being done and it willl be coming soon (been hearing that since before March).
And for what? Seven new aircraft, two of which are already available and three new helicoptors including the CX2 (like anyone really needs a sim for that). All for $30. What a let down. |

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hi Sharpeye,
The P51 PTS is actually included in a patch that can be downloaded from the FS One website. It has a separate model for each step of increasing complexity. I don't know about the solo stuff. Have fun, Dave |

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I have an Edge 350 aerodynamic question.
I assume there is an aerodynamic explanation for what I am seeing with the Hanger 9 Edge 350 33% in FS One. When flying the Edge 350 33% straght and level, left rudder will produce a yaw without much, if any, pitch or roll. However, right rudder will produce a slight pitch up and a significant roll to the right. Why is there a significant difference between the effect of left and right rudder with this aircraft? |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Frankfuss,
I actually have no specific knowledge of an answer to your question, but that won't stop me from guessing. Could it be that the wind settings are affecting the flight characteristics? Have you tried to turn of all wind to see if the situation still exists? Scott H |

With the quality of physics simulation that is apparently in the design of FSOne, I'd be very apt to bet that there is an explanation of the cause of that possibly odd behavior. I'd bet on 'em in a heartbeat. |
