RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I bought FS One without the controller. I have a JR 9X II (or 9303 in the US) and it works very well with FS One. It is nice to fly in the sim with my own radio. My friends bought FS One with the Tac Con controller. It works very well for them, but I prefer the feel of my own radio.
Regarding the realism... I have a Hangar 9 .40 sized stick, so I scaled (and re-painted) the 120 stick that comes with FS One. My findings comparing the sim version with the real plane is as follows: (1) My rates in real life are very different to the rates in the sim. Therefore, my plane is VERY responsive to aileron movements - more than the high rates in FS One (I prefer it this way). Flight performance is very very similar in the sim compared to my stick. I love it! (2) Take-offs in the sim are far too easy... it takes a lot of practice to get your stick to take off in a straight line in real life, unless mine is not set up ideally. To me this is a very minor problem. There is only one thing that I would really like to see for FS One, and that is more aircraft. I bought the sim late 2006, and would have expected a few more models by now. The good thing about the wait is that we were assured by the developers that the add-on aircraft would be of the highest quality, hence the loooooong wait. I'm sure it's going to be worth the while/money. |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
brazz,
Totally agree on the takeoff assessment. Hard to describe in words but with small models in general, they tend to have a "squirlyness" to them on liftoff (for lack of a better word). Even when environmental variables like winds are very light. I would equate it to the wing rock debate I see come up often. Very rarely do I see a model airplane take off so smoothly like I do in FSone. Ironically landing is pretty good at least It feels like it's in the ballpark. Took me awhile to get the hand of landing which is the same as it was in real life whereas in G3 it was pretty simple. Let the expansion packs be unleashed ! :-) $>.02 Ken |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hi Henry,
I'm a beginner like you. I got the version without the transmitter and I bought a 7C Tx. My experience is that it takes some time to set up the custom transmitter in FS One because you basically have to repeat the Tx setup steps and save a configuration for each aircraft that you want to use ... this is the painful part that Ken and Playntraffic referred to but I didn't find it that bad. After the setups are saved, to me, it's no more complicated to pick your custom Tx for a given aircraft than it is to pick the Taccon setup for the same aircraft. If you use a JR transmitter, I think you get a jump on some of the setup steps because templates are already saved for them. For the Futaba ones, you can copy these templates and you just have to shuffle a few of the channel assignments because Futaba and JR use some different channel numbering for some functions. From a beginner point of view, what is good is that you can program or adjust the various features of your computer Tx just like you'd do for a real aircraft. This means that in addition to trying things out in the simulator related to learining how to fly, it also helps you learn how to use the various features of the Tx without having to pay for parts if you mess up (eg. like mixing, dual rates, spoilerons, aileron differential etc). All in all, I think it's a good tool. Like Brazz says, a few more planes would be a good thing. I also hope they add some instructional videos for sailplanes and helicopters in addition the pretty helpful ones they have. I think the other programs have them too. |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hi Brian/Michael/Anyone else,
I've been wondering about how to assign the E-swift throttle to a 2 pos switch or to a knob or to the keyboard or evento the spoiler channel. Basically, I'm wondering if I could mainpulate/edit the servo function relationship within the Eswift template so that I could add a throttle servo or trade it for say a landing gear function. As I understand it, I should be able to assign one less channel than what my Tx has and any more would require a keyboard assignment. Could I assign the switch or knob to a channel within my Tx? I'm not sure how to edit the servo assignment in the template? Not a clear question i know, but any light you can shed would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Please, please, please give us more info on the upcoming expansion pack...

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I have been using FSone since January of this year with a JR631 transmitter. Generally I fly fixed wing aircraft and everything has worked fine - all channels respond just as expected including flaps & retracts.
I have tried to fly the blade CX heli, as I have been given one as a birthday present (but my wife won't let me open the box until my actual birthday - 3 more days). Anyway after I start the rotors and take off the blade holds hover for a few seconds and then starts to toilet bowl. I tried to adjust it using the transmitter trims but couldn't get it right. I tried re-calibrating the transmitter but no difference. Is this a transmitter selection/calibration issue - or do I just need how to learn to fly a heli properly? Andrew McConnell |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Some good news today for FS1. there is "Sneak Peak" up on there web site now (2 free downloadable planes)

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Kavik,
FSone does not include the Arrow 40 but does include the Alpha 40. The difference being flat bottom vs symmetrical airfoil. I personally tried both and found FSone to have enough of that "what if" ambiguity about flying that I didn't find in G3.5 but rather than just take my word for it I encourage you to see if you can try them both at your hobby shop. All the shops in my area have both setup and ready to fly. I will tell you that the under 12 kids love G3.5 I did fly them both at my local hobby shop for awhile before I made my decision. You are correct, FSone does not come with as many planes and many feel that the custom options available are difficult to understand but the options are there it's just a bit difficult to understand at times. You cannot custom make your own planes (currently). You can "alter" planes and make them larger or smaller, heavier or lighter, etc...... Some don't care for that ability. Some do. For me, I really don't care if I can't make my own planes if the environment I'm flying them or the options given don't allow me to make it fly like my own. At the same time I thing it's advantageous to take advantage of the Internet community in helping to develop planes since there are many talented individuals capable of doing so. Also, and this could become a big issue for you, you'll run into the Great Planes vs Hangar 9 syndrome. Basically FSone will never have planes from Great Planes (or any other company) and vice versa which is really too bad because although both companies some cool planes, all their planes aren't necessarily good. And that is actually sad. I'd rather have the option to use either. $.02 Ken- |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
ORIGINAL: Kavik Kang Do I have the right impression thinking that G3 is a better computer game and FS is a better RC flight sim? There haven't been enough opinions posted to be accurate. And the online polls haven't been accurate either. And you've seen just what you've seen, not everything posted everywhere. Having used both, I'd say they both are close, but no kewpie doll for perfection. Neither is better enough to be the winner of better flight sim. But that's just one person's opinion. ;) |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Well, considering my Son and I have crashed millions of dollars of simulated airplanes and helicopters...Either FSone or G3.5 is well worth it. We have both. They are both good at some things and not as good at others. You can't do dynamic soaring or glider towing on G3.5, but you can't play online with a friend on FSone. When I first got the FSone I thought the Funtana flight dynamics were superior modeling to G3.5. Neither models short period dutch rolling tendancies in the deep stall regime very well, but they are both excellent for playing on rainy days and honing your basic skills.

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
It is now 8/22/07 and I havn't seen a post since 7/24/07... Is this SIM dead??? Is this thread dead??? One of the web sites (inertiasoft) shows 1.0.5 as the latest version and yet I have version 1.0.7... What's up folks??? Where is the supposed next service pack discussed months ago??? No news in this case is bad news to me. Help???!!!
|
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
It's not dead, just stalled!
|
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Definitely stalled. I like FS One, but the support isn't great. To me, the software is incomplete, it has great potential but it needs more development.
I've mostly spent time trying to learn helicopters lately. I've discovered a couple more bugs. If I'm interrupted and leave FS One running for say, half an hour, when I get back it is usually locked up. This happens almost every time. This doesn't happen with any other programs on my PC. Playing with the setup of helicopters doesn't work well. Of course, with the almost complete lack of documentation I don't really know what I am doing. If I make a copy of the 50 size JR glow heli, then try and fly the copy (no changes made) the sim crashes. I don't know how gyro's work in FS One. When I go into the heli config screen, it looks like the gyro is turned off, but when I enable it, nothing changes. The gyro seems to be working even before I enable it - but I'm not sure as I've never flown a heli without a gyro. I guess the developers are busy working on the expansion pack. Why not support the people who have already bought your sim? I use to recommend FS One to others in my club, now I can't until I see some improvements made. Lets see a manual (what a novel idea - a manual for a $200 piece of software that has been on the market for about a year), and lets see some of the improvements implemented that were talked about months ago - please! RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I wonder if it is even being marketed aggressively. Anybody know??? How about some of you FsOne developers chiming in here??

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hi Malcolm,
Can't say I've been very active lately, but I have a few responses to your comments. You do realize that Horizon Hobby is the main seller of this software and as such they are the primary support people. The "bug" you referred to in the leaving the computer and then coming back was covered a few posts back. I don't remember the outcome, but I don't recall that it was a bug. I could be remembering wrong. I can't help with the set up, I'm using a computer that doesn't meet the specs, so i'm lucky it runs at all. The most curious thing is the expansion pack. It just confounds me that this is taking so long to produce and release. I just took a quick peak at the horizon hobby website and they are offering two airplane downloads. They don't indicate that any pack is coming just a few planes for free download. To their credit, in this forum the guys from Inertiasoft have been very helpful in the past. I don't see any questions to them lately. What also surprises me is the lack of interest in the forums in this sim. Whenever someone says what sim should I buy, FSOne doesn't even come up. I've seen reviews that never mention FSOne. This winter I know I have to make some PC changes as I want to practice flying backwards with a TREX450 like heli, I realy don't like the heli's that are in FSOne now. I need to buy a video card for my laptop or a desktop just to run FSOne. I haven't decided. Once I get equipment that meets the software specs, I'll start playing with the settings. By the way, you know that there is a more substantial manual. http://www.inertiasoft.com/fsonefaq/...html#Q1052-FS1 I didn't install it, so I can't really say what is more substantial about it. |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I went back a couple of pages in the posts and couldn't find anything on the lockup problem, I guess I missed it I didn't go back far enough. I'm not sure how it couldn't be a bug - the program runs fine on my computer, but if I leave it running for a while unused, it locks up. There may be a workaround, but to me thats a bug. I would like to know if there is a workaround.
I would definitely agree about the helicopters. I have a T-Rex 450, my first heli. FSOne helped me learn to hover, I was able to hover my T-Rex right away. But the choice of helicopters in FSOne is poor, the only somewhat similar sized electric heli, a JR, flies very strangely. I am flying the .50 size glow JR, I tried the Blades, but they are mostly just a pain. They need a T-Rex 450, I would consider the expansion pack if they have it in there. It almost seems like Horizon has abandoned FSOne - hello, anybody out there? Malcolm |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
I fully agree with Malcomm. Not just about the helis but all aircraft in general.
We still have a single copy of FS-One sitting on the shelf for the last 6 months with little or no interest by customers. On the otherhand, we have sold a considerable number of G3.5 boxes as well as the 5 addons and 3 expansion packs during that time. Of course, the the Real Flight Kiosk has a lot to do with that and has easily paid back the money invested. More so than the previous system we installed to run both simulators. In fact, we installed FS-One onto the Kiosk system, but no-one wants to run it. Guess we have passed the minimum critical mass for G3 users. |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
If they abandoned anything, they did not abandon FS One, they abandoned us, the people who trusted them. I for one am not happy to have spent several hundred dollars for something that is not going to be supported. I am on a fixed income. It cost too much already for me to keep up with a hobby I have enjoyed nearly all my life. I cannot afford throwing away good money that is not going to keep up with my hobby. I really hope we are wrong and that they have not thrown us down the tubes.

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
It's such a pity that things seem to have come to a grinding halt with regards to FS One. I really enjoyed the sim, but cannot understand why things are not really progressing. People on this forum and others have been asking over and over what we could expect from the hangar pack, with very little response, except for two PTS trainers offered as additional downloads a while ago. If the small ad (next to the Realflight ad) at the top of this page is anything to go by, we could perhaps expect a showtime to appear in the hangar pack. Does the plane on the LCD monitor in the ad look like a Showtime to you too?
|
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Yes, it's the Showtime 50. The new Hangar Pack will have both
versions - with and without the side force generators. The good news is that anyone who makes a decision to get FS One now will not have long to wait for the Hangar Pack. In the forums here, Brian and I have been helping with technical questions. We are not Horizon so we're not in the business of making any brand new announcements (even though we might like to do that). The kinds of questions about what's coming and when can be sent via the contact link on the FS One site. People at Horizon get those everyday and they respond that way. This thread is starting to remind me of a stock ticker blog. Michael |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Thank you for the feedback and good news about the Showtimes. I agree that this should be a thread of a more technical nature and will ask product related questions on the FS One site.
My next goal with FS One is to upgrade my system in order to be able to use turbulent winds. Unfortunately my current system specs does not allow it. |
RE: FS One by Hangar 9
The good news is that anyone who makes a decision to get FS One now will not have long to wait for the Hangar Pack. The latest promises are more reliable than the earlier ones? Truth is, trust is earned. And as much as we would like, there hasn't been any earned with the previous promises. |

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
FS One Editor:
It has an editor and here's the first FAQ among many (scroll down for more): http://www.inertiasoft.com/fsonefaq/#Q1003-FS1 The FS One manual covers some of the finer points. We've used this editor to make an extra 72 re-scaled/re-sized airplanes that come w/ the sim when it's installed, i.e. you can make some pretty big edits! The scaled airplanes that install range from ~3 inch wingspan up to some full-scale sized planes. Some of these are shown in the online videos ... so I'm confused about the editor comment above. Hangar Pack: I know we're working on one, and the ads include the Hangar 9 Showtime 50 and J-3 Cub 40. Like always, I cannot "promise" anything; any promises made have to come from Horizon. We make the product for them and they produce it, ship it and service it. They also design most of the planes that we put in to the sim. Their number is: (877)504-0233 Moreover, like I said, this is not the forum for making any new announcements. If there's ad info out there or something new like that, we might be able to respond w/ more info. Michael |
