Yeh, it wont be a true 1/5 scale. but wanted to share here anyway.
im taking a stampede VXL and making it 5th scale.
the chassis stretch is already done.
redcat earthquake 8e tires are the largest 12mm hex tires out there. they are a good 6 & 1/2 inches tall, and fairly wide.
The offset on the rims also puts the tires much wider.
In the pics, the pede still has stock front arms. i will be putting rear arms on the front soon. that should add almost an inch.
the chassis itself is stretched 8 inches.
I have a redcat XT body and body posts set arriving tomorrow. I have made the pede's wheelbase match that of the XT body.
I also have a savage flux bumper which i plan to somehow mount on the front. then i will figure out how to mod the rear to match the new front's width.
I will be using the stock VXL system. the ESC will have the fan.
I will be gearing down the motor a fair bit to compensate for the added weight and the larger tires.
The truck currently is still lighter than a emaxx. tho i plan to do some weight shedding, I.E. drilling holes and trimming material where not needed.
Whats the average width of a 1/5 scale???
Thoughts on my project?

I personally like custom and stretched chassis projects alot, requires some skill and creativity. Its also a good way to get a big vehicle fairly cheap! Mine have all been 4wd, E-revo stretched to use a Baja 5T body, E-Maxx with FG bdoy, But I've been wanting to do a Baja 5b style 2wd for a while now. Width, you're going to have to see what it looks like with the body on it. You're probably going to have to get some offset hexes for the wheel to widen it a bit though. Don't be afraid to put the wider grey hexes in the back if all you need is a little extra though. Keep us posted!

i just got the front wider by putting rear a-arms in front. took some modding with some spacers and such. and i need some longer steering links.
in this pic, i only have the left side done. total increase will be alittle over an inch.
this chassis(before i stretched it) was owned by a younger friend of mine. he had put an ezrun 120amp system in it. complete overkill! and with such a short wheelbase and the huge tires he had(proline trenchers) the truck handled like crap.
i think with the stretch and widening, it will be a bit more stable. at the least, it shouldnt wheely every time you touch the throttle!

Looks good with the body.
Looks good with the body.
Still many finishing touches left to do, battery mount, ESC mount, camber and steering links.
But when its done, i will have a 1-of-a-kind brushless stampede!
flux bumper added.

Looks nice, definitely a cool little project. Its hard to tell in the pics, is the front and rear about the same width? Either way it looks like you got it wide enough compared to the body for a nice kinda scale look which I like. And except for the body, its a fairly inexpensive project too. Keep us posted!

I still need to work out the suspension.
I picked up some traxxas links for the front that are longer to match the wider a-arms.
more pics within a day or 2.

RE: large pede
hahahaha love the part where you go ow
Nice job, kinda reminds me of a better version of those ebay 1/5th scale electric models. You can at least find replacement parts for your build... impossible for the ebay ones.

Good job, looks like alot of fun!
Sherv: Those 1/5 you linked (Redcat Shredder and clones) are nothing more than a stretched 1/8 scale truggy. Forget parts availibility, how about durability? I'd rather make my own from a 8ight-t, rc8t ect thank you very much Maybe I'll buy one of the bodies like Nitrosportsandrunner did though.

i hate to say it, but im not impressed by redcat's shredder. and the reason is cause i had an earthquake 8e. they have one flaw that really hurts the truck.
the diff cases have screws that screw right into the case. these strip overtime, causing diff pinion shaft play and diff's to fail.
and the shredder is just a stretched earthquake. to my knowledge, they have not yet changed the diff case design.
if they change the diff case design, then the shredder will be a decent large scale truck.
they are just releasing some 1/8 brushless models based on the current 1/8 nitro profesional line. that is a much more sturdy chassis for a powerful brushless setup. i think these would have been better for a 1/6 or 1/5 version than the 8E.
