Default RE: Baja 5B Mods-Lets See Them

Hello. I'm new to this particular forum but not to 5th scale. I just picked up a used 5B last night. I have a couple questions and hoped I could get the answers here....

I removed the plastic trans gear cover and noticed that the clutch bell/pinion gear move back and forth about a quarter inch. Is this normal? It doesn't move back and forth like the bearing is smoked but rather in and out towards/away from the engine.

My car is missing the 11mm purple spacer directly under the clutch bell. The hole on the engine is stripped out. I suspect this is an important mounting point on this side of the engine.

Anyone hear about the engine cases breaking on the left side of the car? One of the "spare" engines I received had two broken mounting bosses........

The car came with a Jetpro pipe and the original owner said that the additional leverage and weight of the pipe is what is breaking the cases. That and the stadium size jumps he used to frequent.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

NA it should not move 1/4th of an inch...take the pinion gear loose then pull the clutch bell housing outward while keeping it outward push the pinion gear back in place and tighten it down. This worked for me with my monster beetle and as far as the hole in the engine scrap it for parts and buy you a bigger motor like a 29cc or higher. IF these suggestions do not work then I suggest that you call TROY AT FG-PERFORMANCE.COM OR MIKE AT RCNUTS HOBBIES.COM OR BIGBOY AT BIGBOYS TOYS .COM OR ANY OTHER 1/5TH DEALER THAT WORKS ON THE CARS THAT THEY SELL.

OK simple question but just curious. As we all know HPI sends barely enough 2-stroke oil. Got my buggy friday and already a gallon through it. Anyway what oil are people running in this engine and what ratio? Hpi say's 25:1 but i can not find anything for this specific ratio at the usual places. Help please.

I'm using Bel-Ray in a 25:1 ratio, but a lot of people are using 32:1 without problems. After I'm done with my second tank, I'm planning to go to 32:1

Great list of mods and tips guys!

I finally got things moving.

I ran today with a DDM Dominator pipe. Wow, what a difference over stock. The stock flat low and mid power now comes alive, and the top end is screaming. Very impressed.

The shocks were leaking new out of the box. This was easily remedied with a ".025 shim under the shock shaft 2 o-rings to create the required "squish".

3 minutes into my first run with everything stock before I even installed the pipe, the socket head of the pinion screw broke off and the washer jammed in between the pinion and spur gear. The moment it locked up I shut down to find the problem. Instead of gassing it again and tearing up the gears, I was able to pick the washer out of the gear with no apparent damage. I extracted the broken screw remaining in the output shaft of the clutch bell and re-installed everything with a new higher quality screw and loctite. You guys were not kidding about low quality screws.

Switched over to an Airtronics M8 and a waterproof failsafe from Schumacher.(one of the nicer failsafes available and waterproof to boot!)

Next step will be a reed kit, porting and then milling a window on the intake side of the piston skirt to take full advantage of what the reed valves have to offer.

I would like to try the sound of a silencer on the exhaust, like a dirtbike or quad, but the Dominator`s stinger is too close to the right rear tire to be able to install a silencer. A good silencer creates a deeper and much more pleasant tone. Anyone familiar with MX bikes will know what I mean. Shorty pipes are loud and nasty, full silencers are deep, smooth and powerful. Power can be heard more in tone than in volume.

Hi, what is "stall" when talking about the clutch? If I drill or dremel the shoes willit give better torque? Would I have to drill or remove the same amount from each shoe and if i drill in the same locations?
