Replacing piston ring
Hi,
I would like to know how often do you replace your piston ring? I mean I won’t open my engine head just to take a look at the ring condition, is there some kind of index like “every 80 tanks or so…”
Thanks,

RE: Replacing piston ring
When it starts to get hard to start is a good indication! I usually replace every 10 tanks on my modified motors and 25+ tanks on std motors. For the cost of a new ring and gasket is well worth replacing before needed really!

Wow, ten tanks? I admit, I have yet to run my engines to the point of where they need new rings (not yet at least), but ten tanks does seem like to short of a duration.

These are modified race motors so I prefer to have them at the peak performance all the time! some times I will replace only after a few tanks

RE: Replacing piston ring
i replace them when the old one comes flying out the exhaust in chunks
kiddin
ive done 25+ tanks on my g27rc zen and its starting to NOT pull wheelies so to me that means she's getting low on comp

RE: Replacing piston ring
I'm no expert, but I doubt there really is a standard duration. I'm sure it all depends on how hard you run the engine and with what mixture settings are used. You always want a brown paper bag color on the plug at FULL THROTTLE. I would just do what da mad maori said, waiting till you see a small drop in performance, then replace.

RE: Replacing piston ring
As a general rule of thumb..Replace the piston ring after 25 hours of run time...or both cylinder and ring ..if the cylinder walls look scratched or nicked..
You have to chose what is best for your application of use... and how you use your RC Unit.....If you race every week end that's a different story all together
cuz you always want your engine the best running condition.....Just my thoughts here.....AKASlawhammer

RE: Replacing piston ring
it should be written on the side of the cyl....
eg.. 32-28.... is a 32mm bore / 28mm stroke so the piston ring will be for a 32mm bore

RE: Replacing piston ring
I haven’t opened my engine yet, I would like to order that ring without opening the engine first, is there a way I can know that? Any Titan owners that familiar with their engine,I know that the stock engine is CY28cc, it is probably 34mm-36mm, but which one???
Thanks.
Thanks.

RE: Replacing piston ring
Titians run a Smartech made engine no CY some were ordered from the factory with Zenoah motors but if it is a 3 bolt barrel it is Smartech 28cc engine, sorry I don't know the size of the bore on these.

RE: Replacing piston ring
Haha was just cleaning out some old boxes and just found the technical data for Smartech Engines 23cc 28mm stroke x 32mm bore, 28cc 28mm stroke x 36mm bore!

RE: Replacing piston ring
Thanks! so 32mm & 36mm it is (for the 23cc & 28cc engines), any idea what’s their thickness? I noticed that for these measurements they sell both 0.8mm thick & 1mm thick?
