Default Concerns about Baja 5T maintenance vs nitro

Planning on getting myself a nice, sexy new 5T in the next few months to get back into R/C, especially after I got burnt out of nitro with my Revo 3.3. It was alot of fun, but I spent to much damn time tweaking/working on the thing vs haveing fun with it. I am hoping that the Baja's don't need as much fiddling around and maintenance.

1. Is there anything I could REALLY use to help protect my 5T from dust and debri?

2. Exactly how bad is the maintenance on one of these things? What do I really HAVE to do to maintain a Baja vs what would be considered overkill and unneccassary?

3. I plan on just bashing and having fun with this vehicle, any suggestions on what parts might break first that I will replace with something more durable?

4. Does octane of the fuel matter much or have any effect?

5. What are absolutely a must do maintenance after your done running a Baja for a day?

I know I can't ignore and not take care of a Baja, but I don't wanna be stuck babying it like I had to do with my Revo 3.3, especially getting the engine to run right all the time.

I'm no veteran by any means, but I'll throw in what little I can help with:

4. I've heard both ways for octane. For the most part people say that octane doesn't matter. It has something to do with these having low compression engines, or something to that effect. I could be way off on the explanation, but it's something like that. Other people swear that they see a performance increase. Personally, I just bash my baja 5b for fun, so I use regular gas.

5. These gas engines are not all that finicky. They hold their tune very well, and are pretty low maintenance. I don't think they need after run oil (I haven't used any yet), and they rarely need the spark plug changed. You can change the piston ring, but that's usually a ways down the road (when you start losing compression).

I'm sure others will definitely chime in on this subject with some specifics.

Well here is my 2 cents
get the truck
Change the radio if you want
Lube the rear diff this is optional but highly reccomended.
Tighten the steering saver a bit
Charge the battery
Put gas in it regular works just fine 25:1 gas mixture Klotz oil is awesome!
Prime it run it tune it Love it
Nothing like nitro at all
Keep the air cleaner clean and oiled and run the tires off it.
You may need to tune the engine just a bit after the first tank for max power.
I ran a Gas 2 stroker last summer and did not move the needles all summer.

The general cleaning/drivetrain maintenance is the same as with a nitro - but the engine is much easier to deal with on a 5T.

agreed. as a ,atter of fact, gassers are so much more fun because of not just the way easy tuning, but also the longer runs per tank. 30+ min and even 45min are typical run times, depnding on your engine an your tank capacity.

gassers have occupied me for so long that it was not until like a couple of weeks ago that I busted out my nitros.

1. Outerwears, outerwears, outerwears.

2. Maintenance is absolutely ZERO. You do not even have to empy the fuel after use. If you mean long term, then bearings, filters, spark plugs and breakages is about it.

3. Impossible to say. Spur gear probably.

4. If you run increased compression you need more octane. Period. Regular pump gas is fine for 13:1 compression.

5. Nothing.

As you can see, in terms of maintenance and fiddling, this is FAR removed from the nitro hobby. We pay for the privilege though.

My revo was parted out over a year ago so its long since gone.

The instructions say to specifically empty out the gas tank before storing the Baja. Whats the truth to this if you say you can leave gas in the tank? I didn't know you could run at higher compression, how is that done?

the lack of required maintenance (as opposed to nitro) lets you spend more time running and upgrading. beware it is highly addictive!

Any vehicle 1 to 1 or small scale needs to be maintained properly. If you are going to store a gasser for a long time then you need to empty the fuel tank but if you are going to be running it regularly no need. Gas will not attract moister like methanol the main ingredient in nitro fuel but will turn to varnish after a while but takes quite a while.

They say to empty it cos they're obliged to, it's a fire hazard with a nimh battery in it. You do not need to empty the tank unless you are storing it for months.

I was running 4 MGT's loved them all but got the baja and then an ss.Never going back to nitro.Get a compressor and cleaning is easy blow it out spray some wd-40 or whatever you like blow it off again put it away till next time.Addictive you bet lots of neat stuff for it.Generally break the motor in set the needles for max output and forget about.

Another thing to remeber is how often do you mess with a weed wacker or a blower engine.
Plus with the new synthetic oils it makes storage easier.
I ran my 5T a bit last week when the weather was warmer.
Almost through the first tank of just running it wasy with a few bursts of heavy throttle to clean it out.
Brought it back in after the neighbor complained about the noise and I was tearing up her frozen grass.

Oh well back on the shelf for now.
The nitro comparison after years of my LST and other Nitro trucks here is how I see it.
Gas is awesome charge the battery and grab the remote.
Prime -choke-pull till pops-choke off fires.
Good power run awesome handles great.
It is large and be ready for stopping room when it gets spooled up.
NITRO
get truck
charge battery
charge starter
charge glow ignitor
take all that crap outside
prime the engine
put glow ignitor on get it running don't let it idle to long hurry and throw the body on unless you are cut out to leave it on.
Go go go
get it cleared out then you are off.
Run for a few minutes and check temp
oh **** running hot richen up hi speed needle
Just alot of stuff to worry about.
The only thing I can see with the LST in comparrison to the 5T
The LST is crazy nuts fast off the line and will pull wheelies.
But the weight difference is crazy!
The 5T is very heavy and to see how well it does run in stock form is very impressive.
