Default A Stroke Of Genius

Ok, so I haven't got a lathe but need to make one end of a rod smaller in diameter than the rest of it.[sm=72_72.gif]
What I do have is a bench grinder and a powerdrill.

Hmmm
Idea.

[sm=idea.gif]

Worked pretty well actually.
That bearing got very hot though....[sm=48_48.gif]

Has anyone got any similar tips or tricks for getting around the lack of equipment in the shed?

Thats very similar to what I have to work with. You need to get yourself a drill press and a great big bunch of metal files...sooo useful!

Wow that sure is the hard way to do it. Remember safety first that grinder could start at any time.

With the right tools you can get a professional job. What A square shaft? Have you ever seen a sprocket with a hub before? much easier to work with.

The desperation and lack of tools have made me think like you,DV!I have used a bolt with the same innerdiameter as the thing i had to grind off, fastened it with a nut on the other side, and put this in the powerdrill, and put the powerdrill in a vise.Used a coarse file to start with, and ended up with sandpaper

That is actually good results for the tools you resorted too.

I have a question: How did you know when to stop grinding down? I.e. how did you know you hit the diameter you needed and prevented youself from grinding too much?

Done something similar before... put the job in the drill press, turned it on, and worked the diameter with angle grinder/disc sander!!!
We now call it the "vertical lathe"

Money money money.....

safety first that grinder could start at any time.
The grinder was spinning as well as the rod in the drill.
(Or are you referring to the sign behind it?)

What A square shaft? Have you ever seen a sprocket with a hub before? much easier to work with.
Um, this was a case of I had to get that little sprocket on to that shaft.
Also a case of "use what you've got"

How did you know when to stop grinding down
I had a sleeve with the same inner diameter as the sprocket, so I'd grind a bit, take it off, check it, grind a bit more.....etc

Great thinking as long as you have the drill going in the right direction or it may take a little longer! Lol
