Hello Jollyroger;
I also have a GP Spectra (ARF) that I have flown for 2 yrs now. And now a friend of mine wants me to build him one (a Spectra). Going to start on that soon. The Riser is a nice plane. I also the 2 meter Riser to finish some time this year.

Jollyroger, Yeah the Riser 100 is a great plane for the price.
Well today (rainy day) I got out the Riser and card table and actually started covering the right wing! I finished the transparent blue, it's been almost a year and I'm going to try to finally finish this thing!

Okay I finished covering the right wing this morning and all that is left to do is install the spoiler and a couple of decals I like to use. I like to put my "AMA 471103" on the left wing and "Wood's Rule" on the right. At this point I'm going to keep moving forward with the left wing and leave the spoilers until last or after the maiden. I'm a little rusty on covering wings and usually I'd rather get a root-canal but it was actually a little enjoyable as I envisioned the Riser 100 catching a thermal. I live in Northern Cali and it's been quite the rainy winter here but I hope she's ready when the warm weather decides to finally show up!

I wanted to post some pics of the covered fuse too that I covered last year, I have the covered vertical stabilizer and rudder too that I need to glue on. I wish I'd cowled the Power 25 up front but I'm not sure what to do about it now though. I think it will create lots of drag. If anyone has suggestions I'm open to it, at this point she needs to get in the air. Thanks

Hello Alan;
Your plane looks really Great.
I haven't done crap on repairing my 100 since the boo boo last fall on it. Just been really lazy. A friend of mine had brought over a Great Planes "Spectra" kit for me to build for him in March. He's got to many oars in the water so to speak with all his building a 12 foot B-26 of his Dad's old plane that his Dad was a tail gunner on during WWII.
I put a cowl around the the electric motor on his Spectra, I used part of the block wood that came with my Riser 100. And I used a sanding wheel on a dremal, shaping the inside of the cowl. So much faster. But the wood is really soft, I'm going to fiber glass the nose to the front of the hatch area.
I've been lazy on this project also. Should have been done by now.
The motor is a Turnigy 2830/11 1000kv 210 watts with a 10x6 folding prop.
I don't know what he will use for a battery though, He mostly flies his Warbirds using Life batteries where I use lipo's in my planes.
If anything ever goes wrong with the motor. It is designed to be pulled out through the front.
Well have a great time maiding your Riser 100.
David M.

Thats a great idea carving the block that came with the kit I didn't even think about that. My motor is a Power 25 870Kv which is a little bigger diameter than your motor I think, at least it looks almost as big as the fuse. I'm going to see if I can use that block for mine too. Wish me luck!
p.s. I should have the left wing covered this by this weekend.

Hey Alan;
I really don't think you will have enough room to do what I did with the Spectra. I try to think ahead before I do anything on a build. I read the manual and look over the plans weeks before I start to build. That's like in post #195, when I was mapping out the nose for the second Riser 100. I haven't even started on that one yet either.
I'm getting ready to build the second half of the Spectra wing. But always, I forget to do something ahead of time. I was thinking about spoilers for it, but the left wing is already built. And my Spectra comes in like a freight train because it has no spoilers in it when landing.

That's like my friend, he brought over bright orange and corsair blue for covering. Corsair blue, yeesh. Now if it was a nice bright or metallic blue, that would be a great combination. Like my hatch cover on the Riser 100 was done in Metallic blue. And that was just enough to do the hatch cover. So, I covering it in his orange and my transparent burnt orange.
For the second Riser 100 for when I ever get it built, I was thinking about "Plum, White and Transparent Lilac".
Plum from the nose to just under the wing spar on the fuse and then over the open area of the rest of the fuse trans. lilac and white. Trans. Lilac for the h. stab and v. stab. and Plum for the rudder and the elevator. And plum, white and lilac in the wing area. Bringing out my feminine side I guess. I always liked colors like this. I think that would be kind of cool in the sky.

Mike, Thanks for the kind words, I love looking through the transparent film at the wood! David, I also spend lots of time studying the plan and thinking about what or how I want to do something. Originally I never planned for a cowl due to the size of the motor, it was after it was covered and saw how unfinished it looks on a glider compared to a plane that I second guessed my decision. I think I'll fly it and if it is a huge deal maybe I'll try my hand at building a glass cowl for it. I like the metallic blue too, it probably look good with orange.

Alan;
I am glad that you invited me to your build, you have helped me out a lot building my Riser 100. You have a beautiful plane. I hope it fly's well. When I ever get my broken Riser back together, plus the new 100. I am going to mix in some up elevator into the Spoiler deployment. I haven't used spoilers for a very long time and when I deployed them for a test. Thank goodness, I had that thing up high, it dropped it like a rock.

Your welcome thanks for coming along and the kind words! Yeah I thought about pitch changes during deployment too, sometimes it is the result of the speed of the deployment. I'm flying mine without spoilers to get her in the air faster but will be very cautious the first time and several "mistakes high". I recently bought a Spektrum 8M2 and haven't seen if there's a throttle delay option like there is on my JR 9503 and Futaba radio's. I want to have them deploy at a constant slow rate. Did your Riser ballon during deployment?
Hey what do you guys think about me building a one off fiberglass cowl for my R100? It will be thin enough to clear the Power 100 I think, worth the effort? If so should I fly it first to see if it is even an issue? I'm more concerned of performance than looks on not having her cowled.

Since it is already built without a cowl, I would try that first. Look on the bright side, You shouldn't have any heat issues out of it.
"Did your Riser ballon during deployment?" I don't know what that means, explain please.

Sorry for being unclear David did your Riser pitch up or down when the spoilers were deployed? Yeah I think she wont have any heat issues hanging out in the wind plus with 870 Kv power 25 with a 14x7 prop she'll make altitude very quick!
today I lightly sanded down the left wing and started covering the wing with transparent blue monokote. I'm hoping to have the wing finished this weekend

Okay I now have both wings covered and overall I'm very happy how it turned out. My only area I wouldn't mind redoing are the wing tips, both have a wrinkle that won't come out. I have a small list to complete, first I need to glue on the vertical stabilizer, install the gold-n-rods, hook up the rudder and elevator, and balance the plane. I cut some of the nose off of the Riser and made a new F-1 yet it still looks very long. The tail moment doesn't look long enough to balance out that long nose.
I'm now really looking forward to looking up through the blue transparent Monokote as she floats on by!
Woody's Rule!

The whole plane looks great. I hate doing wing tips too. What size prop are you running? On my Riser I had a 11.6 on it and did a good job hauling the bird up. Someone on RCGroups said that he like it on his Riser 100 better than the 12x6 he was running. I guess the 12x6 was heating up more. But, he also was running Turnigy SK3 Competition Glider Drive 960kv 510 watts max. like mine.
I just got done gluing the back on the Spectra, and I epoxied the control tubes in this afternoon. It's all taped up, I'll pull it off after 24 hours.
Sorry about the messy house, bachelor what do you expect. But you can see it all taped up, and the nose without the motor.
When I work on fuselage's, I do it my computer desk. After it all dries, I will take a razor blade and cut the remaining rod casing off the top.
So, where did you get the spinner from?

Happy Easter all. Your Spectra's looking good David I like how you mount you engines and cowl them. I chose the same setup as the slightly larger HH Mystique, same engine and prop assembly (14x8) that mounts on it. I did so because I had a coupon and the cost of the prop assembly was inexpensive ($20) to begin with. I know a power 25 870Kv with a 14x8 prop is more than I'll need on the R100, I'm anticipating the performance in climb will be similar to my 2M Radian which has a quick climb to altitude unlike my Radian XL. I don't fly around like an airplane under power with my gliders so I think it will be fine, I really made F-1 former stout to handle the power. Should be okay!

Happy Easter Everybody:
Well, I have a Glider Drive in my Spectra. And if I go full throttle on it, it will go past vertical and start to loop it. On the Riser it took it up quick too. I need to get new screws and nuts for the spinner that I have on this one, the ones that came with the spinner wasn't long enough. I bought the spinner from Value Hobby, but they don't have this one anymore. The spinner for the Riser came from Esprit Tech. ( http://www.espritmodel.com/bb-alumin...ropellers.aspx) this time. A little more costly though.

Well I recovered the vert stabilizer tonight, I didn't like the way I did it the first time so the entire Riser is now covered. I have so much going on the rest of the work week so I won't have anymore time to work on it until this weekend. I plan on mounting the vert stabilizer along with the control system and then pick a good day to maiden

2nd Riser 100 Kit
Hey guys;
You know when I posted back in post #189 that that this 2nd Riser 100 came from an Estate Sale that club member got it from. I did some digging around after looking at the receipt again. Turned out that the owner of the kit was a WWII "Tuskegee Pilot", his name was Lt. Col. Charles A. Lane Jr. He passed away November 8, 2013. He was 88. And he lived in Omaha, Ne. Wow, I am glad he left that paper work in the box.
