Default servo setup/wiring question

About three years ago i remember setting up a GP Spirit 2m sailplane for a friend. He wanted it modded so that he could utilize the throttle control of his remote (a standard JR 4channel Tx) to control the optional spoilers that were available on the plane. So I spliced leads (copper wire and shrink tubing with connectors that i cut from fried servos) and made a harness for the servos. I connected the harness to throttle output and he was able to control the spoilers (up and down) using the throttle (mode 2 Tx: left stick forward and back). My question comes now: I want to do something similar with a project idea. I want to build a GP Spirit Elite and i want to use the stuff i have (6 micro servos, a spare 7 channel receiver, and my current 4 channel Tx). I could set the sailplane up regularly with ailerons, rudder, and elevator, but I want to know if a Y-harness will do the same job to have the flaps controlled by the throttle channel.

Basically, i use Y-harnesses for aileron functions (because the servo action is inversely related) but if I were to connect the two flap servos (one in each wing) and connect the Y-harness into the throttle channel in the receiver, would the servo action be the same? (would the flaps move up and down together instead of opposites like ailerons?)

I know this is confusing, please post for clarification. I appreciate all responses. It would open up a new world for me if Y-harnesses could be used for this function.

Thanks in advance

Trent

Basically, a Y-harness connects two servos in parallel; hence, both move in the same way commanded by the same channel of the receiver.

For non-computerized radios, a servo reverser can be used, which is a special Y-harness that makes both servos move in opposite directions:

The other option is to install the servos in such an arrangement that suit your needs for each case.

You may find better responses to some of your questions in this thread:

Yep, for flaps or when you need them to both move same direction, check for movement, then install oriented right way. Example-servo horn pointed to left on both sides. Might not look as good as aileron installation, but being hidden in wing or covered with hatches, it won't be noticeable at all. Or, use a single servo to operate both spoilers, solves the orientation and saves weight as well.

I'm looking for a way to slow down the action of servos (ie for flaps) to give a more "scale" performance. A previous blogger stated to do it through radio programming (?) or if not available, purchase a device for that purpose.
Does anyone understand a process through "radio Programming" ( plan on buying a Futaba 7C Transmitter) ?
Does anyone know of a source for a device to control the speed of a particular servo's operation (ie Futaba S3004)

Appreciate any advice Harrieet1 (or [email protected])

This might be what you want: http://www.dionysusdesign.com/index.php/cPath/29

6th and 7th items on that page are servo rate reducers. One slows down the servo to 4seconds total travel time, the other to 6 seconds.

The Elite has flaps not spoilers and it has them on two separate wings. Though I suppose someone with a good bit of building skills could ginny something up I can't see where it would be easy. Especially since the Elite as far as I know, only came in an ARF.

Harrieet, while that may sound cool and look neat on the bench, in flight it serves no purpose and you really want to get the flaps up quickly right before or when you touch the ground, esp if you're landing in tall grass.
