RE: What to buy for a first radio??
I recently bought a JR8103. A very popular radio. A few months later I was told it's a good radio, butt he Jr9103 is a great step up.

Take a look at the Futaba 9CH.
http://www.brucknerhobbies.com/ and http://www.servocity.com/ both offer them in transmitter only packages for a more affordable price. (a bit over $300)
This is a transmitter that will exceed your requirements for a long time to come!

The Futaba 9C or the JR 9303 would be a good choice, you will be a long time ever out growing either one of them. I have the 9303 and it's a great radio, it's very user friendly (easy to program).

you don't really need a 9ch radio I would look at the futaba 7chp. It has all necessary functions for runnig ant type of heli and is significantly less expensive.

Get the best radio that you can afford. I'd go w/ a 9 channell even tho you wont need all 9 channels and all mixes. Try and save money now and chances are you'll be buying a second radio somewhere down the road. Why pay twice ???

I'd get the 9C if you can afford it... otherwise the Hitec Optic 6 would be a lower cost alternative. Both of these radios take frequency modules, which means you can legally retune them to another freq without sending them in, and you can buy a synth module for them that will allow you to dial in any freq within the 72MHz band. The 7C does not take freq modules...

I have both a 9C Super and an Optic 6.
Both great radios, and both have specific features I like.
But if I was going to buy just one radio, it would the 9C or 9C super.
Great heli and fixed wing capabilities, and 18 model memory with the CAMPAC.
I run mine with the Futaba Synth and fly everything with it.
This year is my first heli (Raptor 30) and the 9C is perfect with it

I have a 9CAFS. I do not have the CH.
My instuctor/friend flies his R30 with a 9CAF.
Works great.
The only real difference will be location of the Idle up 1,2,3 switch cluster. (On the right in the 9CA)
