Default Getting started in Heli's what to get?

I've been looking into getting a heli for a while now and would like some input as to size of heli as well as what brands seem to be better flyers and will allow for future 3-d performance.

I've been looking into a Fury 60 expert, is it stable enough for a beginner? will it allow for future 3-d stuff? Would i be better off starting w/ a .30 size and moving up later? In the intrest of keeping the costs down I would like to buy one heli and not have to purchase one later down the road if possible. But if its better to learn on one and then move up im not opposed to doing that.

THnks for the help,
Matt

In the intrest of keeping the costs down
In that case, I think you can rule out the Fury. I think almost every heli pilot dreams of owning and flying one of those dream machines. They are probably the best model helicopters in the world. If you can afford the initial purchase costs, fine, but then you have to fork out hundreds if you have a little bump. Plus, for a beginner, you will smash it, and you definitely don't want to smash a fury!

Would i be better off starting w/ a .30 size and moving up later?
Almost everyone goes this route. But over the last couple of years the 50's have became very popular and give you a performance similar to the sixties at not much more of a price than the 30's. The Raptor 50 V2 is my recommendation. Alot cheaper, but flies bloody brilliantly. It will take you right up to as good as you can get. But also is a good trainer being not much larger than the popular 30's. You really can't go wrong with it.

THnks James!

I really liked that fury 60 expert ...and if i bought it to learn on adn progress on then the cost inst a factor...BUT!!! those repair costs could eat me alive. I was talking to a friend hear at work that just got one. He put his into the ground the other night and ordered parts to fix it and it came to almost $350. CHRIST!!! for that much i could afford another. I know im gona dumb thumb it into the ground at some point thats inevitable.

WHere would u suggest looking for a raptor 50v2 online?

thnks,
Matt

Don't we all love the Fury Expert! I thinking of getting one when I'm alot older and am rolling in it.

For a raptor 50V2, they are popping up all over the place! I check these classifieds every day just to see what's going:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=8

I am in the UK so alot of my searches are on UK based sites. eBay is great for picking up bargains. I don't know if you are familiar with it or not, just check out this link: ( take out the stars and type in eBay . com . It's not allowed for some reason.)

Those are my two main sources. Have a look at this for a nice fury:

That went for $800.
Goodluck

Default Or, if you're buying new...

I'm so used to buying 2nd hand stuff, I forgot to include a few links to good places for new raptors.

www.heliproz.com
www.helihut.com
www.ronlund.com
www.cyberheli.com
www.heli-kraft.com

Errr... My mind goes blank when I try and list things, but when I'm searching I could probably come up with a few more.

Those are all good. I think they are ordered from the top, starting off with their reputation. Not prices. Just check out what they charge for the kit and don't forget to check the shipping! Alot of the time it's just a few extra dollars on the shipping that determines which place is cheaper.

Go over to century and buy a Century Hawk Sport. You cannot beat it at 159.00 shipped. Many people including myself like it. It is GREAT for learning the basics. THen it will do rolls, loops, inverted ect...

Nah get the raptor...

Hawk needs too many upgrades to fly like a raptor....

Swash guide, carbon torque tube...

may as well have purchased a rappy in the first place....

wire driven tails dont cut it anymore.... I have a hawk sport, and the rappy owns it...

What about the Quick 30? my LHS supports them and i've had a chance to fly one recently and it seems pretty nice. Also...bout howmany times can i expect to dumbthumb this thing into the ground? Or i guess the better question is...about on average With a experience pilot teaching you...how many times can u expect on average to put it into the ground.

THnks for the links to the Raptor sites. Im gona read up on them some more. REally had my heart set on that fury 60 expert.

not that the hawk would be a bad beginner heli...Im not into buying a cheap POS that im gonna have to upgrade the heck out of. I've learned to spend the money now rather then do it twice and spend three times as much. Guess thats why its so hard for me not to get the fury 60

I've also got my heart set on Fury. But I know if I get one now that I would be so scared of crashing the thing that it would just sit there. A fury is on my list and I should be getting one in a few years. It's a shame to let them go, I know how you feel.

That's a good way to look at the things before you buy. If you really like the Fury because of its performance, then you will love the Raptor 60. But the 50 is a better choice for the beginner and it will serve you well.

As for crashing, I hate to say it, but it's gonna happen. If you are taught by an experienced pilot and always take it steady, then your chances are vastly improved. And if you get a simulator, then WEE HEE! You'll be flying like a pro in no time. They really really really do help, I don't care what anyone says, they are worth the investment! The controls get sunk into your mind and your responses when flying are quickened be a considerable amount. Well worth the dosh. Or download FMS.

Quick 30's haven't been given out to be as good as they look unfortunately. You'll be better off with a Raptor 50 V2. You won't need any upgrades to fly that like a bat out of hell. They can come with carbon blades, metal swash and a whole lot more.

rogers259

If you have your heart set on a 60 size...

Look at the R60 V2 with a decent motor....

Repairs are a little more expensive than a 30-50 raptor, but the whole heli is more stable and has the 60 size character you desire...

You can also spend money on nice carbon and anodised bits later (you would with the fury expert as well) to personalise the heli how you want it....

It will also convert to a 90 machine for very little money....

Mine is a raptor 90 with a 60 engine, and she sure is sweet...

Raptor 30 or Shuttle 30

crash kit for the raptor is like $60

The raptor will do it all and more, and is cheap to fix.
