Default transition from ff to hover

I an hover all day long and have good control in forward flight. My problem is when I bring it in for a landing.
I usually do several missed approaches / go around and end up in a 30' high hover then bring it down from there. I feel fortunate every time I get it back.
What is your technique?

get the heli far forward from the 'landing pad' then start slowing down as you go backward.
then go behind the pad when you are under 40% throttle.
then lower the throttle as you approach the landing pad and cut off when the skids do touch the ground, not bouncing though.

This sounds more like the controlled crashes that I have been doing. I am trying to transition from forward flight to a hover then I will be able to land it gently. I would like to put a scale fuselage on this but only after I have a chance of survival

Do you have any fixed wing experience? If you do than think of the helicopter as just another airplane. The rotor disk is just a wing. You still have all the the basic control; elevator, rudder and airlerons. Your throttle controls the speed of the turning rotor blades. Increase speed and you increase lift and the opposite to decrease lift. Your landing approach is similar to that of an airplane. You will control decent using the throttle and elevator. The transition from forward flight to back into hover is a matter of timing and airspeed. Allow the copter to decend to about twenty feet and flying parallel to yourself with a separation of about thirty feet. Use the elevator to bleed of airspeed until the copter almost stops than apply forward stick or down elevator and at the same time increase the throttle collective. Sounds simple but believe me it is not. I'm still consider myself a beginner. In this part of the RC community you never stop learning.

I haven't seen anyone mention 'flair'. Landing from forward flight means you need to retard the forward motion with a flair, that is pitching up. as above:
Use the elevator to bleed of airspeed until the copter almost stops
A lot of these machines fly very different, the bottom line is it takes a lot of practice. This is where a simulator is great to get the basic technique in, then you just have to learn how your machine handles in life to perfect it!
