need help please on my Venture 30. Coming from a plane flier new to heli's, whats easiest way to tune engine. (Cant exactly full throttle & hold the sucker nose up like i'm used to with planes!). keeps cutting although running fine(but hot), lots of smoke. Using 10 -15 % nitro, synthetic fuel. os 8 plug.
Also is there a larger motor that will bolt in with min. mods.? Think this one may be tired.
Appreciate any feedback

Heli tuning is more like tuning for RC cars, you tune by temperature. Shoot for 200 - 240 degrees on the cylinder. You can get a good cheap IR thermometer (about 30$ ?) from Tower hobbies and RC car shops.
They have to be run very rich, the extra fuel is used to keep it cool. High nitro (30%) helps with gettting flyable power at those cool rich settings. if you are running a TT39 the main needle will need to be around 3 turns out. There is a modification a lot of folks make to the idle needle to, makes the mid range a bit richer, seems to help a lot.
Not sure if the venture can be upgraded. if so try the OS 50 they kick ***** and are a breeze to tune. if not, an Irvine 39 would be worth a look. Haven't flown the irvine 39 heli but i was very impressed with the power and quality of the 53, everyone says the 39 heli is every bit as good.
best of luck, and be carefull

Really appreciate help Spaceman spiff, (liked your th/pitch advice too)my os30 will only run 1 1/4 turns out with 15 % nitro. Still very hot.
Bought heli 2nd hand so think i will replace eng.
Anyone know if i can squeeze the os 50 in there? Would love more power. I feel like a beginner again after flying planes, although the planes seem real easy now.
thanks

From: Tucson, AZ,
Thanks,
There was a good article on tunning on www.raptortechnique.com
Power will go away if it getts too hot. Helis really don't tune the same as the planes do (i'm a former planker too) you have to run them ridiculously rich to keep them cool enough.
Does the engine still have compression? Do you have someone experienced to help out?
If you decide to change the engine, have a look at the Irvine 39 (will drop in place of the OS 32) or if you can get the right gearing and mounts, the OS 50 runs cool, is a breeze to tune, and provides tons of trouble free power. It took a while for me to get my TT39 going, but the OS 50 was just drop in and go.

From: Tucson, AZ,
Just checked on www.heliproz.com they do make a 50 conversion for 79$ US you can get the OS 50 and muffler for around 200$ US.
Forgot to mention the idle needle was critical in my tt39, maybe for the OS 32 too?

Smoke is good, Smoke is very good when flying heli's. Also be aware that a change in weather from one day to the next will affect how your engine runs. Try a Hanger 9 extra life sport glow plug. I was burning plugs out ever 5 or so tanks until I got these and then I went a whole year without any troubles.
