the "star treatment" has been removed regarding that "other" site so it won't be starred out anymore...I was mistaken for dropping to their level....just hope users realize that "silent" censorship is going on there which in my opinion is worse than the "star" treatment or any other kind of censorship.

Volkul, isnt that 80 or 91 in the Freya, going to suck alot of fuel, will I have to do fuel tank mods with a larger tank, or is the tank it comes with large enough for a 10 min flight on a 91. Daz...

On my Freya 60, I usually get 14-15 flight time. On my Freya 80, the heli starts sucking vapor exactly at 10 minutes.

manilaheli, which engine setup do you prefer, the 60 size or 80 in the Freya. I see alot of posts where they say put an 80 or 91 in it, and since you have both you should have the best answer. I would like to stick with a 60, but I dont want to be underpowered and have to buy a 80 or 91 later. Daz...

Obviously I'm having a grand time with the 80. I'd be lying to say otherwise.

HOWEVER. I will still recommend you start with a 60 engine.

Here's why;

Learning aerobatics using a 60 engine will teach you how to manage the collective. Most if not ALL the current 3D maneuvers were mastered by the current pros using 60 engines. If they could do it, I want to as well.

In my case, I had the 80 for 4 months before my instructor allowed me to slap it on the Freya. He also wanted to be sure I could manage the collective first by testing me doing multiple rolls. Only until I could do 3 consecutive rolls without the engine sagging did I too realize I had the rudimentary skills I needed and the 80 will just make me better, NOT hide my weaknesses.

If you can hold your breath, maybe you can opt for the new OS 70 SZ engine that's more powerful than the 60, but not as thirsty as the 80 or 90 engines.

Jason and others,

This weekends Hirobo Cup in Texas will have a Sceadu .50 and a Freya on buddy boxes for those that want to try them out. Of course we will keep you up high but you will be able to try without buying. After I see how the person does on one of these machines, if my Fury is available, we may sneak to the side and I'll let them fly it. It will not be on a buddy box so... well you know, I'll be a little picky about who flies it.
Anyway, if any of you can make it out this weekend try to do so. It ought to be a good time. It hasn't been to terribly hot yet!

I definetly dont want to buy a 60 for it, and then couple months later buy a bigger engine, my pockets arent quite that fat. I will look at the OS 70sz which I never heard of at this point, but that sounds like it may be the ticket.
Thats good to know the Freya comes with everything to put whatever engine you want in it, but I was looking to purchase from Cyberheli which I dont think is in the US, will it still come with everything needed for various engines? Thanks, Daz...

Did you get that Freya yet? If not then you might want to consider the Raptor 60 as well. It is lighter than the Freya, VERY resilient to crashes, FAST in FF, and cheapiest of all to repair.

The R60 doesn't have the woof, wah, or clutch issues of the R30. It is a nice flying ship and to consider the Freya and not the R60 is missing out.

I have flown both and they are very similiar except for the weight. Of course you can put a YS 80 in and you are DONE!! Talk about a rocket! There are TONS of upgrades and parts are everywhere.

If you are considering a plastic fantastic in the 60 size then you should not overlook the Raptor if you are looking into a Freya.

lift, i am hearing about some issues about the super-thin (that would be the wall thickness) of the tail boom and the bad location and insufficient boom supports... any input?
and no blades longer than 680's?

flmgrip,

Note: My R60 has approx 5 cases through it.

The Raptor 60 will accomodate 680mm blades. I have 686 MAH blades with 97mm Model Sport tailblades and they clear fine.

There are no issues that I know of regarding the boom and boom supports. The boom is the same size as the Concept 60 which is ~24mm. It is plenty strong to hard piro manuevers. I was leary of the higher mounting points on the rear of the frame but I have not had any issues and my 401 gain is up around 80 in Idle 1 at 1780.

There is a long boom & torque tube set out from TT that allows for at least 700mm blades. HeliHut has the boom for a whopping $13 and the torque tube for $18. Not bad. I am not sure what length blades but seems like I heard that 710mm will fit. I have two of these sets on standby and will be going to a R80 before long swinging at least 700mm blades.

The only problem that needs attention is that the torque tube ends were not secured properly to the tube and would let go. This was addressed last fall and the fix is to drill and pin the tube with piano wire. But as far as the boom wall being to thin or the boom support system being weak? Not heard that one.

This is an EXCELLENT 60 that has unfortunately been clasified as a "Raptor" when in all actuality it is a much better design. I am having fun with mine and I'm not going to cry when I put here in the dirt!

Yup and they are the best blades I have flown to date. Auto better than the SABs and are as stiff as the V Blades. I got them in a trade and love em! Need to get a backup set! But MA has some very stiff prices. Who has them cheaper?

Nope, not up north. Down here in sunny Houston, TX.

Lift, I was looking at the R60, but I was hearing to many negatives on it. It looks nice, but you mentioned you have alot of upgrades on yours. Does the R60 fly well out of the box. I didnt get the Freya yet as I am still undecided, and I dont want to jump into anything I will be unhappy with.

Right now its a toss up between the Fury with OS61 WC, and the Freya with YS80. These 2 setups seems to be getting rave reviews so far. Daz...

fitenfyr, advice well taken. I am definetly not ready for a 60 yet. I went out to the field yesterday, flew fine but when I attempted a sort of nose in landing, I screwed up and got a little disoriented, aborted the landing, and ended up landing like I normally do, from the rear.
This was an indication to me that I still have alot of learning to do. So, yes I am going to stick with the Venture until I feel I have mastered it, and then move up to a 60. Daz...

Hello Daz,

That's part of the reason why I was gently steering you towards the 60 engine first kinda like what spiderman said "With great power comes great responsibility".

As for mastering the Venture before getting a 60, you need not wait until you're a 3d pro to get a 60. IMO once you can confidently fly circuits and/or do autos on your Venture, get that next bird you want to get whatever you want.

This hobby is the greatest at separating you from your $. And there are not alot of people getting stinky rich off it either.

What fitenfyr has mentioned is solid advise. I agree. The only compromise is a 50 ship. It gets you the best of both. Affordability yet very potent in power and potential. I love my R60(yes, they fly great out of the box BTW). But I am not a fan of the fuel economy. I get about 8-9 tanks per gallon and flying become expensive when you go that route. Just imagine what it would be with the YS .80 you are considering. I am going through a case and a half per month with my YS .61 ST2 alone!

If you want more power, improved autos, and stability then upgrade that Venture to a 50. There are instructions at RR by "ColeopTer" under his gallery. I had all the parts to do it but backed out because I was concerned about the 9.78:1 gear ratio with the OS .50. But, I later found out that with the 620mm blades it will loaded the engine fine and you will get some tremendous results! If the Venture 50 comes to the states I am gonna get it. I think that the Venture is tuff as nails to a crash, designed as a 50, tracks like an arrow in flight, has great cyclic for 3D, and truly is a 50 in waiting. I recommend that you do the Venture 50 upgrade after you have 2 more cases through your 30. Don't bother with the Ergo Long boom(too short). Just get:
*Sceadu 50 motor mount
*Sceadu 50 fan hub
*Raptor 30 belt
*Vigor Boom
*OS .50 SX-H
*Muffler of choice
Follow his instructions and you will be set!

If you don't want to do this project then consider the Century Falcon SE v2. I think this is THE 50 to get if you want to keep the costs down. I am putting one together now and it is very impressive! Otherwise get the Voyager 50 IMZ or the Caliber 50. But, for that price I would just get a 60.

for whoever thinks about starting out with a 30, here is the reason not to...
daz is thinking after 5 gal or less about a 50 or 60 size heli, so the $250+ he will be spending on upgrading could have been spend right away in a better place (like fuel....)
fuel consumption is of course a consideration, but the awesome power of a 90 is just not comparable with a 60 and the power of a 50 is just not comparable with a 30.
so please, don't by a 60 if you are even thinking about a 90, by a 90 right away...
of course ideally it is better to learn flying on a less powerful heli, because it is a piece of cake to do those maneuvers on a bigger ship, but there is no reason to not go big right away (if that's what you want to...)
and fuel economy: come on guys, how many of you are driving a truck or sim. with a fuel econ. of 20m/g or less (i know it has nothing to do with it, but somehow it has... )

Lift, I went and looked at the upgrades for the conversion thanks, but I think that I'll pass and stick with the Venture 30 until I'm ready to move up to a 60, as I already have a buyer for my Venture when I'm ready to move up.

Flmgrp, I agree with you to a point. If I had to do it all over again I would probably have went with a 50 size. But then that would have been a problem when I wanted to buy a 60, because I would hate to spend that kinda money on such a little move(50-60).

I think the decision rest fully on your resources, if you have no one to help you fly, your better off with a 30. However if you are like me and have a heli expert at your side, you could probably move up to a 50. I dont think a 60 would be a good choice for a 1st timer because it is simply to intimidating, at 1st the little 30 was pretty intimidating. And the good thing about a 30 is that you can always sell it, I figure, after I sell the 30 it will end up costing me about $70.00, thats my loss. But $70.00 is a good investment to learn to fly the Heli, so thats not so bad.

Flmgrp, I know your point is to save money from the jump, and believe me I wish I could, but the money you save on fixing a 30 vs. fixing a 60 is worth it, if you crash. Fortunately I have not crashed and havent had to spend the money, but I dont regret buying the 30 one bit.

Its been times when I was flying when I told myself, if I crash it I'll just spend a few dollars to fix it up, now if that had been my dreamship, I would have been less likely to progress as quickly.

daz, totally agree with you and maybe there was a small misunderstanding, i meant to say, first ship 50 (still cheap to repair), second ship 90
i'm a glad you will have a buyer for your 30... that's even better...
