Here's the best thing you can do, IMO...
Go to this AMA web site (below), plug in your zip code, and get a list of all of the clubs near you. Give the closest ones a call (or email) and see if any of them has some experienced heli guys. I'm sure they will be glad to help you out. You'll also get to know the guys in the local club, and you may decide to join up, to have a safe, convenient place to fly, and get some pointers from the more experienced guys as you fly.

I did a web search when I started out and found a club about 1hr away. I contacted one of the guys there, and got lots of good advice from him before I bought my kit or radio. I since found a club much closer, ~30mins, and joined up there.
RaptorTechnique.com also has excellent step-by-step instructions on programming your radio and setting up your gyro, servos, and linkages, if you want to have a go of it youself, initially...

I live in Queens and fly in both Queens and Brooklyn. I work at Fantasia Hobby in Flushing a few days a week and I get out flying almost every weekday in the morning for a few hours. Saturdays I visit Marine Park in Brooklyn or I fly on Long Island.
Call me at Fantasia, (718) 460-5671 Tuesday to Friday, 2:30-6:15 PM, ask for David.
