hey
on my fury extreme... when ever i do i hard change or stop with the tail i hear one loud clicking. very disturbing and i am afraid something will break in flight. any tips where to check for faulty parts, anybody with the same experience ?
thanks

I'd pull the tail gear box and check your gears. Some people have problems with wearing out the gears. If yours are close to worn out, they might be skipping a tooth causing the clicking. If thats the case you aren't far from possibly losing the tail altogether. I pull mine apart every few gallons just to check it out and regrease it. I've not had any appreciable wear but others haven't been so lucky.

are you sure it's coming from the tail and not something like the teflon shrink tube binding on the t/r pushrod guide and then slipping through with a click? because if it's really coming from the tail i'd tear the whole tail down and rebuild it inspecting each piece as i went along, including the boom and tube drive for cracks.

well... the noise only happens after an aggressive tail input... i took everything apart and inspected it from the tailboom back incl. the tube drive... didn't find anything, but still makes the noise...
i will take the rest of the heli apart and inspect everything... hope i find something

You are jumping a tooth on your crown gear. (The white gear on top of the main gear.) This mesh needs to be tight with no slop. You will start taking out teeth on the crown gear if you keep doing this. Make your adjustments to the gear mesh so that the tail take off pinion gear is tight (no pressure but no slop) on the crown gear.
Secondly, turn down your tail speed (piro rate). Use some smart set up practices here. If you get real aggressive on the tail, you will break parts. Period.

While I do not have a Fury, I have had to accept the same fact on my Ergo, except that I have a belt driven tail. If I want a solid tail that has a fast rate and supre quick response, I eat tail belts. I go through maybe two a year. They dont break, but they just start missing some teeth.
I hear it at time when I do several piros in a stall turn and then quickly straignten it out, you can hear the tail blades biting real hard to hold the helicopter, and sometimes I hear a skip, and I can always be assured that there is now one less tooth on the belt. I run metal gears in front and back, so the belt takes alll the abuse.
So, while I cant help on the clicking, I can agree wiht the wearing of parts associated with a super fast tail. But its worth it.

mesh in tail-box is just very slightly on the loose side, washer would make it pretty tight...
so i won't change the tail, just changed the crown gear and will test fly, i strongly assume this will solve the problem...
thanks everybody

took it out. first flight, no problems.
second flight, clicking started again. looked at the crown gear and the same gear is showing uneven wear again. less than before, but the clicking just started again.
now i am baffled. i had no crashes with this heli, only very minor tail rotor contact with ground. no vibrations.
the gear mesh between the crown and the tail seemed to be perfect, no play, but no "high spots" or tight spots. was easy to turn.
added: there seems to be a little play between the crown gear and bevel gear to the tail, but i do not see anyway of reducing that play, i do not have any washers installed... ?
what is going on ?
please help i am kinda lost here...
thanks

Sorry that you are still having problems. There are really only 2 things that I can think of that may cause you to be jumping gears. If you have any main shaft movement (up and down) or the front tail take off pinion shaft bearing is not red locktighted and has worn some of the shaft away. If your gear mesh is good from the start, it should stay that way unless you have one of the problems I mentioned.
I will also say this: I have my tail turned down to eliminate the possibility of this problem. I have my gyo down to about 38%, and I have about 25% stopping delay in the gyro so that it doesn't skip teeth when it stops the rotation. If you are up near two rotations per second, you could experience problems unless you are carefull starting and stopping the piro rotation. You can't do blinding piros and stop them instantly and expect the tail system to stay intact.
There are several ways to attack this problem with your setup. You can do fast piros, but you just can't let go of the stick and let the tail slam to a stop. Or you can set up your heli piro and stopping rate slower so that you can bang the sticks and not hurt the heli.
