Default Auto Question

Say you're flying a nitro and the engine cuts out in flight. Do you want to hit throttle hold to auto rotate in or is it just used to induce an intentional autorotation?

I use throttle hold for intentional auto practice and before I start or activate any heli to hold the throttle. I have also programed in an auto pitch curve that best suites whatever heli I am flying. Some people will set a curve such as -7- +5- +12. Some will use all they can get on the bottom and top. Example: -12 -+5- +12 if your heli will do it. I set mine at -10 -+4- +12. Get in a habit of using throttle hold to limit run away motors at start or when you plug the power in on an electric machine. You never know when you have bumped the stick a little. To practice an auto start with the heli about 5 feet high and hit Hold and get use to floating it down with pitch management and try it higher as you get your stck fingers. The object is to keep the rotor spinning all the way down. If you are 100ft high you will probably use all the neg pitch you can to spin the blades and then flare your pitch at about 10-20 ft high for a soft touch down. Autos are fun and as you get good at it you will do inverted auto's and all kinds of variations. Yes the Trex450 will auto.

Some people have different pitch curves in idle up and throttle hold, some people use symetrical curves in all modes.

So the only reason to hit throttle hold if the engine dies is to get to a different pitch curve. Frankly I set mine the same in all modes so if something happens I dont have think (always a good thing) and don't have to play with switches.

PM me your email address and I can send you a draft of a how to I'm doing for the magazine section on auto's.

I also fly with the same pitch curve in all modes, so if I lose a engine it will auto just fine no matter what mode I'm in.

I guess it is personal preference.

I have mine set up so that the pitch curves or the same on throttle hold that are on the idle up.

My recommenda tion is go with what you are comfortable.
