Dave,
Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and your family! I may try filling the wing tank first, then fuselage, or-just keep doing what I'm doing and be careful! Have a great 2012.
Regards,
Gus

I find that reducing the amount of flap used for landing and compensating it some crow ( Both ailerons up 4-6mm) improved the way the model landed for me. I found that with too much flap it was quite easy to misjudge the power required to '' balance' the model in the landing configuration. The crow set up keeps the drag required as well as changing the angle of attack.
Regards Al

Hi Ali,

so how much flap do you use with the 6mm crow ?

I am using 3 3/4" flap with 1/4" of crow (measured from the outer edge). Cg 225. This requires lots of down elevator, about 1/2" at the root.
I only have 9 flights so I am still tweaking throws, but this feels good.

What is the consensus on the use of crow with the UF? Is it needed, does it make life easier if used? I have seen it used with great success on a SF giving a slight nose up attitude when landing and very consistent.

I have about 50 or so flights on my ultra and and I must say its a a great sport jet...best I have flown and most forgiving...the bird is very slick so it loves lots of flaps..I think I have 4 inch ....the more the marrier. I have takeoff flaps at about 10 degrees and full flap for landing...I like setting full flap on downwind and slow fly and drag it in on final...seems to slow down best that way....

....How fast you do the approach and how far from the runway do you chop the throttle?
i pull most of the power out on a turn to upwind (this bleeds speed quick), then drop the gear and do a gear pass, use less then 1/4 throttle to turn out and downwind, drop to take off flap on the turn to base, and pull most all the power and hit landing flap on the turn to final, use throttle to adjust rate of decent and drop it to idle again when i cross the threshold, it'll float all the way to touchdown. the big mistake i've seen made on landings with the Flash is people are scared to slow them down and then they have to force the landing or they shoot way past them.
Thanks KC. This is exactly my problem. I am afraid of slowing down too much and I force the landing with bad results. On the other hand if I slow down too much I can get, as happened twice already, a sudden wing drop. Happily this happened very close to the ground and resulted in minor scratches to the wing tip.

powerbox sensor is plenty for the Flash. careful with too much flap though, the Ultra is a little more forgiving to flap then the Classic but neither like excessive amounts.

Managed to get 4 flights on my UF this friday just gone.
The first with the Jet Cat Telemetry fitted. I managed to read that my UF was landing between 35- 40 Mph. Which when compared to other sport jets it pretty slow. I know the lowest that we ever managed to read on boomerangs when we had eagle tree fitted was 30 Mph on an XL. So I am pretty impressed that such a slick and fast sport jet can slow down to this... Even more so when you factor in that there was very little head wind to slow us down.

Regards Al

Can you tell us more about the telemetry? What was the top speed?

I installed the conformal tanks friday. When i installed the wing, the wing bolt punctured the right tank. Needless to say, it caused a mess.

That's because we are still hungover from NYE. But you didn't answer the question. Tell us more about the telemetry, is it info that is downloaded after the flight? is it sent back live? What ecu's does it work with?

Its a live system that feeds back to a hand held unit with an LCD screen on the ground which my caller reads out. It's not just speed info it provides either.
The system was originally from ProJet, but if I am not mistaken a specific Jet Cat version was produced... See here
http://www.projet-ecu.de/english/html/telemetry.html

I am sure Bob W can tell you more about availability in the U.S

I have used it with version 5 5.5 and 6 ECU's

i've seen the JetCat version, it was $750 not practical for my budget.

Spektrum has 'announced' that they are releasing a telemetry system that interfaces with the JetCat ECU, but that's about all the info you can get out of them.

That is a great landing speed. Could you share your configuration for landing. Flap setup. Any Crow? Any down elevator for the given flap setting?

Thanks in advance.

I will get my UF on the bench later this evening and take some photos and measurements as I have a few PM's relating to this. Please be aware. I am not stating that this is the only, or the best set up for a Ultra Flash. I am a firm believer that every plane has an ideal set up, and that is the one that the pilot is most happy with. I would never be as presumptuous to say that any other set up is wrong. Instead I try and advise people to have a play with their radio and balance set up till they get it how they like it. Just because it states it in the manual, does not make it right. I have found this true to so many different aircraft over the years, and now a days I am always flying and thinking " what can I do to make this feel better" Example... My UF set up is great at slowing the model down, but I need to find a way to get the flap to elv mix coming in slowly so that I don't get the ballooning up that I get if I drop the flaps too suddenly, and while the model is flying too quickly.
Regards Al

You need a 18MZ to do that, even the humble 12FG has that facility, have a word with schrodem he has two 18's.

Nope, one of them is with me
I have around 1.5 second "slowdown/servoslow" on the flaps, elevator at around 1 sec, at moderate speeds, I don't even notice when I apply flaps, plane just slows down, no pitching etc (at least that I as an n00b can feel/see )

Is it not as simple as using the servo slow function Ali?
