Viper 2m or flash
Hi all
I'm looking to get my 2nd jet.
I want to know witch would be better.
I need something that will fly very well on a p80se.
and is easy to land IE no bad habits.
I have a 400ft paved runway but want it to be good on grass too.
I like the looks of the viper 2m and the flash, the new flash is ok too.
One thing nice about the viper is its size.
I have a boomerango sprint now with a p80se in it now and its a very nice plane but not sexy at all.
So what you guys think

I bought and flew the Flash (got my waiver on it) and it really needs the P-120 and is pretty much a dog with a P-80. The Viper is perfect with a P-80. With the short field you have...the Viper would be better IMO. If you already own a P-80, then go with the Viper.

Can't speak for the Flash on a P-80SE but I can tell you it is no dog on a Jet Central Rabbit. The Rabbit is advertized as having 19 lbs of thrust. Mine is built pretty much stock but with a custom Tams pipe. I have been told the Rabbit is a pound lighter than the P-80 but can't confirm that. Mine came in right at 21 lbs. I fly out of a 400 foot paved strip also - with no trouble at all. Takeoff's can be performed in 125-150 foot on a 90 degree day and landings need less than 200 foot. I have never tried flying from grass but with the Dreamworks trailing link struts can't see that it would be a problem. Straight and level speed with the Rabbit has been radar'ed at 175-180 and punching the majic 199.99 is not much of a stretch if you come out of a shallow dive, not that I would ever do that! (Rules you know). The big block turbines probably have more vertical than I do, but mine will got straight up farther than I can see.
I like the looks of the Viper also and would think either the Flash or Viper would be a good choice.

Flash is fine with an old P80, we flew one for a year off our PMFC grass site, so with a P-80SE would be even better! Ultra Flash is lighter loaded, so I think the P-80SE combo is going to be a good one.

+1 for the Flash, it flies beautifully even with a lil ole P-70, the P-80 will push it along great. so long as you never fly one with 30+ lbs in it you'll be happy, just keep that in mind and if the opportunity arises for you to fly one, politely decline or you'll be like Rex and think your P-80 is a dog after flying a big block Flash.

RE: Viper 2m or flash
The kero plug may not fit on the Flash as the glow plug just fits in the wing cavity. With the viper should be no problem. I have the classic flash and the tomahawk 2M viper. With a p80se the viper would be better bet, I have not flown my viper yet but a couple of TH vipers are already flying at our field. I fly my flash with a Wren 160 and have got the jet central cheetah for the viper.
Chatty.

RE: Viper 2m or flash
OK, my 2C worth and you may call me if you would like to discuss further. . .I have owned and flown both. . .
Flash:
* originally powered with our Jet Central Falcon. . .excellent performance with 23 lb of thrust. 8 minutes flight time with both tanks. . .NO bad habbits and lands w/o bitting you.
* repowered with Super Eagle @ 30 lb thrust dialed down to 124,000. . .actually used less fuel than the Falcon. . .
* now with Rabbit for power (19lb thrust) using only one tank (fuselage) and flies far better than the two previous turbines. . .weighs 1 3/4lb less in turbine weight minus fuel for the wing tank. . .Many combinations like this flying today. Sold mine and it is still flying.
Skymaster 2M Viper
* Quality is good, but not at the same level as CARF products.
* powered with our Jet Central Cheetah kero start of 31lbs of thrust. . .turbine weighs 3 lbs.
* superior performance with excellent slow flight characterestics. . .lands at a crawl when set up per factor specs.
* well over 15 gallons of fuel consumed. . .5 well known and recognized pilots have flown it "their way" and all have said. . .fuel it up so I can fly it again.
* will maiden a second 2M Viper this Thursday with a Rabbit (19 lb thrust). . .I suspect little difference except the vertical. It weighs 1lb 2oz less than my first one.
As for asphalt Vs grass 400' runway. . .I would go with the 2M Viper as it will fly much slower in the landing configuration making it easy to operate out of the runway stated. I would definately change over to trailing link struts for grass. . .just easier on the airframe. Flash struts use shear pins which break easily. . replaced with pins from McMaster Carr with no issue afterward.
Summary. . .both excellent. . .overall quality is far better with the CARF Flash. . .2M Viper wins in the overall flight envelope category. . .
As for the kero start plug. . .all ours are internal so it is not an issue. Check to see if you can rotate your turbine in the mount to put the kero system at 10 or 2 o'clock. If you have not purchased your turbine yet. . .give me a call @ 941-468-1246
Good luck,
Eric

RE: Viper 2m or flash
Have to agree with KC, I thought my Flash was fine with the P-70 until I changed it to a 120SX. Now I some times think that I would like even more power. I did fly mine off of grass a number of times with the P-70 so a P-80SE should be just fine.

RE: Viper 2m or flash
Go with the Flash - preferably the Ultra as it apparently slows down even more than the original Flash. Put trailing link gear on it. Keep it as light as you can as the P80 is a bit heavier.
The viper 2M is a nice airframe but I don't buy the argument that it will fly better with the P80 than the Flash. I know someone who has one with a P70 and he is really wishing he had more.
What ever you pick you will probably be fine. Depends if you are after scale looks or not as well. If you prefer speed over scale looks the Flash will be it.

Blufox gives a very fair comparison between the two. I had the Viper & now have a Flash. The Viper was a more relaxing jet to fly & slower to land. The Flash can be docile to fly at normal speeds, but a completely different animal at high speeds, when it takes all your concentration.
The Flash construction is much better quality. They are both good in different ways & either would suit your runway type & length.

RE: Viper 2m or flash
Go with the Tomahawk 2m Viper for the P80se.
It is so light, at least 2,5 kilo's lighter then the Skymaster Viper.
Why? Because Tomahawk has way better quality composite work compared to Skymaster.
My Viper was 9,5 kilo's with a P120 and.
The flying quality is also second to none. Very neutral plane and aerobatic is perfect.
It lands as easy as a Boomerang jet.
In my opinion the top 4 will be:
1 Tomahawk Viper
2 Ultra Flash
3 Classic Flash
4 skymaster Viper
