I ordered two lengths (each) of the 1/2" and 5/8" hinges and they arrived last night. The quality seems quite good. I'll give them a try this weekend and post some pics/impressions.
Regards,
Jim
P.S.: Ryan, I'm sending you enough hinge for the F-86 so stop your whining about pics.

OK, I tried the 1/2" and 5/8" piano hinges from Lee Valley Tools. Both of them have pilot holes (spaced about 2" apart) along each side of the hinge. I clamped the hinges in place and drilled through the fiberglass, then flipped the door over to drill the countersinks in the fiberglass. The hinge was installed using BVM countersunk poly-ply screws. This was just a test run, for the final install, I'll also glue the hinge to the door using Hysol.
When using the 1/2" hinge, the screw holes are about 3/32" from the edge of the fiberglass which is a bit close especially for a countersunk hole. When using the 5/8" wide hinge, the holes are about 1/8" away from the edge which is better. All in all, the 5/8 is a bit easier to work with, but I found that the hinge was quite a bit harder to turn than the 1/2" hinge and I'd be concerned whether a small door cylinder can generate enough force. If you've got a larger diameter cylinder, you'll likely be fine. I'm using small cylinders so I'm going with the 1/2" hinge.

Jim

Jim,
I measured the hinge pin of all three sizes of the lee valley hinges at. 041". I also thought that they were a little tight to move with a air cylinder. I picked up some. 039" music wire to use as a hinge pin. I havent had the chance to try it yet, but i think it will free up the movement some. If it ends up being to loose, ill just use some. 040" stainless safety wire.

Thomas, let us know if u can get the wire out OK...on the latest Nelson hinges, the wire breaks when trying to pull it out on pieces 5-6" long.

Did you guys try putting a little 3 in 1 oil on the pins yet?

RE: Miniature piano hinge availability
Not a piano hinge but very useful for hinging gear doors, hatches etc. If there is a curvature on the surface to be hinged a piano hinge is not ideal, and this is often the case with jets. The two hinges on the left are brilliant for larger jets, they have large plates to fix and mount so work for most applications.
If you rebate one of the surfaces to allow the 'hinge' part to finish flush with the edge of the opening you can get very tight gaps with no binding. Used these on a recent Skygate Hawk and HT Modellbau PC21 build.
PM me if you want info - happy building.

I dropped by the LHS yesterday and bought some .039" music wire and used it on the 5/8 wide hinge. It worked great. The hinge moves freely but doesn't have excessive play. This is the combo that I'll use. Although you have the hassle of pulling the original pin, using the music wire has the advantage that it can be easily pulled out later if you want to remove the door for maintenance/access.

Jim,
great to hear the idea worked! I'll be using this process so I can make the panels on my FW-190 open like scale so i can get to the base side of the radial in it. Works out great as well, as I know i can use these on some of the access panels on the F-14 project as well

RE: Miniature piano hinge availability
Hello everybody,
earlier in this forum, it has been mentioned that our hinges come rolled and that this is a disadvantage.
1. the hinges come rolled, because of the shipping cost - some people order 5 metres and don`t like 5 pieces in 1 metre each....
2. It is VERY easy to get the hinge straight by cutting it to length first, then straighten it by simply bending in the hands, this never took me longer than a minute.
We have been lucky to find a new supplier who manufactures this hinge band for us at a much better price now.For this reason, we are able to reduce the price dramatically.
