It might be, but for a typical scheme the difference is negligible. Vinyl is perfect for the Futura.

Default FUTURA 2.5m Radio Setup

Setup below from the THD Manual

1. Heard this airplane requires a lot of down elevator while inverted, where as per manual the deflection asked to set is less than the UP stick movement?

2. What we know that to have axial rolls & reduced drag we always setup aileron going up with more deflection than the aileron going downwards, however it looks opposite in the manual! Or may be negative 17% differential compensates it?

I have been flying my 2.5m Futura for 3 years now with many (150+) flights on it. I can tell you that it will take more down elevator than up to get a balanced feel. The elevators are, in my opinion, too small for this big jet and coupled with a semi symmetrical airfoil it requires quite a bit of down elevator when inverted. I cannot recall excatly what throw I have but it is more down than up and I have less expo in down elevator as well to balance the control feel. I also have a little differential in the ailerons and my Futura rolls beautifully. I think you will want to fly it and do some trimming to determine what amount of differential will work best for your model.

My friend's Futura 2.5 (only 3 flights so far), is showing early fuselage damage due to excessive heat (small bubbles in the paint and some fuselage indentation). This is in the area close to where the vertical fin starts. Using a Rhino 200 SP. There is nothing special in the installation.

Any ideas?

Just got my 2.5 vinyl wrapped. Going with electron gear, thrust vector pipe, & a JB-220 50lb thrust turbine. Hoping that's enough to hover.

Jay:

Turned out pretty awesome, can you post more pics? If you don't mind, I would shamelessly steal some ideas from your scheme to use on my Futura (currently being built) I was thinking the same about the canopy hatch being the whole "windshield" but was not sure, your's turned out great!

Was there anything special about the vinyl wrap? If you don't mind, can you share how much did it cost you?

Thanks

Thanks, & Yeah sure.. I was going to paint mine in the scheme like DLpierce above, but decided to bring it by a sign shop that I sometimes use for paint-mask & things. They decided to give it a shot, but wouldn't give a price until he saw how much time it took. It ended up being $500. The paint job above was going to cost me $2000. I think the vinyl would be much lighter than a full primer/multiple base color/glossy clear, 3 part paint job. "Light" is going to be the theme of this build. Here's a pic of the bottom. They didn't do exactly what I wanted, & it looks like they made the lines off of the wing/horiz-fin's edges instead of aircraft center, but it's good enough for me

Hello All,

My first post on RCU in a very long time...!

Last year my friend (Andrew Bird) and I were talking about the Futura. I had bought his 2.5m Futura and he was saying how interesting it would be to fly a Futura will a full internal duct set. He was theorizing that it would give a big improvement in performance.

So, I got a bit carried away and organised my friend Nick to create a set of moulds, for a set of carbon ducts.

We also used a C-ARF P200 carbon shroud, and the final results look very good.

I guess the highlights of this are:

* Full carbon bypass ducting, added as a retrofit
* CAD designed to fit the model perfectly (Nick scanned the Futura and then used this to import into CAD)
* Nick found that the fuselage opening are not symmetrical or the same size, so this was corrected
* CNC machined moulds
* A C-ARF Kevlar smoke tank was fitted under the turbine

Andrew got a chance to fly this for me last year, before the UK winter weather set in. I plan on having a go once Spring arrives here. The initial impressions from three flights were:

1). Used less fuel
2). Less power required in flight
3). Higher top speed

So, here are some images, enjoy!

Hello Billy,

I'm pondering whether or not to make up a run of these ducts. That is to say the Y ducting - the P200 shroud would need buying from C-ARF.

I'll need to invest a bit in a production mould, so the duct parts clip together along the gluing lines and have a ultra glossy finish.

So, anyone interested, please P.M. me. I'll see if there is enough interest to make this worth it.

Probably more accurate to call it the Y "inlet duct". "Pipe" generally refers to the other end....

I think it's a great improvement. I would put one in my Futura, except I now sort of like the unusual "roar" it makes with the inlet air swirling around inside, whenever I make a high speed pass.

Billy, thats a hell of a lot of fabulous work to have carried out on the Futura, I hope it proves advantageous, and many congrats for following it through, one of the things about the Futura design is that it is a high drag airplane and for example one of my friends here has one and we fly sometimes together with my Futura we both weigh roughly the same and have electric retracts his is powered with JC 180 and mine with a JC 140 RXI and they are as fast as each other despite the difference in power ,likewise I have another buddy with Kingtech 210 for power and it dos'nt seem any faster so I guessing that the design hits a wall at a certain rate of knots and probably it would take twice the power available to go a little bit faster, but all credit to you for the perseverance,

Default Wing tubes

Hello
is there something that can be applied to the wing tubes to make it easier to insert? I'm concerned with damaging the tube guide, but getting the tubes in it's too hard. This is on a brand new build.
Thanks for any ideas.

Hi Edgar, I have found out that in mine, the tube fits easier from one direction than the other side. Try it from both side. I know it is a pain but I would prefer it this way than lose. You can just slightly sand the entry of each side with 300 sand paper to get a little better fit.

I've flown most of them and they all have a similar big jet, light wing loading, good knife edge, fun flying, easy landing feel to them (which I like). The only rap on the Futura is that it seems to take a little more down elevator for inverted flight but I really liked mine while I had it. Obviously the Havoc is WAY bigger and maybe even smoother due to its large size. It also does phenomenal knife edge and takes minimal elevator for inverted flight.

FYI, it looks like Vogelsang Aeroscale is no longer the U.S. distributor for Tomahawk (at least I don't see them on their website). The Tomahawk website "dealer search" shows Elite Aerosports as the U.S. distributor but they don't list Tomahawk in their "Aircraft" menu. I'm pretty sure they carry them though.

Guys
For those looking for stiffer springs for the original main struts, we were able to use the Xicoy "spring hard 10x65 for mains" springs. You will need to use a dremel to open up spacing in the strut upper portion to fit the spring, but is just by very little. My Futura now sits much better.
See spring here

Hey guys,

I was out on our local field on this beautiful WE flying the Futura 2.5 with my new FrSky X10S Radio.

Awesome!

All the best from Austria
