Default Painting Question??

Hi,

So, after my fruitless search for a rattle-can flat clear, I decided to try spraying an automotive urethane. I got a kit from Tri-City Paints (along with a KICK-BUTT deal on a new airbrush that was missing two of the ten nozzle attatchments) that includes the supposedly dead-flat urethane clear coat, the catalyst and reducer. I also got one of those cheap compressed-air spray bottles in case I can't find a friend close by with a good gun. My question is this... Anyone anticipate an issue using automotive urethane over Krylon? Of course, I'll do a test piece first, but I've done those before where the test went fine and the paint when terribly awry. I used to use "Defthane", "Minwax" and "Varithane" polyurethane sprays over krylon without incident back in the Combat Models days. What do you think? TIA.

When I sprayed PPG Flexed and Flat Urethane on my F-22 I learned that you don't spray it on in a heavy wet coat. Keep it almost dry and put on a couple of coats in that manner. A wet coat will yield an almost gloss finish. When I say dry, I don't mean so dry that you get a rough finish. Just put on a thin dry coat that's just shy of showing a wet gloss.

Hi Shaun,

Should be ok, just make sure the base color is completely dry. Follow the recoat time if there is one on the Krylon before you clear it. Most reactions can be traced to something that wasn't properly cured. If possible do your test with something similar of a substrate compared to what you will end up spraying, that will give you a more correct feeling as to what will happen when you paint it for real.

Concerning 2060, flat clears contain a talc, actually silica that scatters the light and creates the low gloss finish. Too wet of a coat and it can sink in the film leading to the gloss. Applying it too dry and you can end up with a rough finish that can look just as bad, possibly even peel. A couple of thin but moderatley wet coats using the correct reducer should give you the results you are looking for. Avoid spraying it on a damp day, assuming you will be doing this at home in your shop and make sure you have some sort of filtration on your air supply. Don't need to get carried away but moisture in your air can lead to a blotchy looking "flat" finish as well.

Have fun,
Dan

BTW, anyone alse getting Trojan Horse warnings when loggin into RCU? Went through 3 just to get to RC jets.

If youre already mixing paint already then House Of Color makes a fantastic additive for flatting. If not then just use testor dullcote rattlecan. I even shoot the stuff on monokote and it works great over enamels too.

Dan, I don't want to derail this thread with virus talk but I am also receiving virus alert messages every time I log on to RCU or change threads.

Regarding the PPG 2060, when I sprayed my F-22 I got one wing that almost glossed out and it drove me crazy till I asked a friend that works in a body shop about it. He gave me the same explaination that you relayed to Shaun.

How about using Future floor wax. Won't hurt Krylon paint finishes, but I don't know if it'll stand up to some abuse.

Whoa, does Future now make a "flat" floor polish?
I think your in the wrong threads. He's not building a 1:12 hotrod.

He does not say what is being built so the floor polish may do the trick

Hi,

It's a Yellow A/C F-18 Single. It's got two colors of Krylon gray. Does floor wax fuel-proof paint?
